D1023319: To me the key question from this is without the initial investment by Saturn / Telstraclear in their networks in CH & Wn to provide competition to Telecom - where would we be now?
Personally its Tax money well spent plus any Tax loss is a direct result of COMCOM's decision in 90's that said it was ok for Telecom to reduce prices where Saturn was introducing its networks ( rather than nationally) - hence no wonder Saturn full network never expanded beyond CH&WN.
While it appears to be the end days for telstra - I am pleased they came when you look at the infrastructure that they provided such as telstraclears fibre national backbone which has been a big asset for large corporates in negotiating WAN prices / service and the competition for old pre restructure Telecom although I suspect that people outside of CH & WN may have a different view.
I just hope COMCOM:
a. handle any Chorus monopoly effectively, and
b. look into SKY's influence on TV content and distribution including any restrictive practices on their part.

Didn't that national fiber backbone come from Clear who in turn bought it from Transrail??
