Hi all, my ol' gran needs a new mobile, her very old hand me down alcatel which she uses to SMS and call is on it's last legs. I'll gladly buy her a new phone, but I don't really want to have to go through the rigmarole of teaching her (several times) to use it, I want something very very simple without arcane menus and keypresses to get things done, it's all got to be spelt out in big bold letters.

Vodafone (which the Alcatel is with of course) used to sell a phone branded as the "Simply", a Sagem VS2, which I think would be just what is needed, something simply and very clear (not just big type, but saying things like "Good Signal" instead of signal bars), but a quick look on the vodafone.co.nz shows that it's no longer on the market, at least that I can see.

I could buy one 2nd hand I suppose and it may come to that - Trademe lists a couple, but I'd prefer to get her a nice brand new one in a box with that new phone smell, if I can.

So does anybody know if there is an equivalent to the "Simply" Sagen VS2 out there on the market currently?

AFAIK the simply is now gone for good.

There are a few around on tradme, as you have found, however I found that they were not very reliable.

I have yet to play with one, but maybe the vodafone 226 is what you are after?

Get her something like the 1110i, simple black n white screen and reasonable large keypad. That's the best I can suggest for now. or try and source a new 1100 which is even better, a lot simpler. I'd offer you mine but it's just been donated to the same cause.

In what way, they break, or not so good on getting a signal?

It's a shame you can't get those Simply's anymore, they were good phones!
I would have thought VFNZ would have replaced them?

It's a real problem these days, there just are no simple phones anymore, they are all 3G+Wifi+Bluetooth etc.
Which is no bad thing, except for people that just want a mobile phone.

the nokia 1100 has one major problem, in that if you call up to an ivr and have to press buttons, they remain on screen when you get out of it and there is no red key to clear the lot of them. It also means the auto keylock doesnt work when you have digits on there, so it is easy to pocket dial the last digits you entered if you dont watch it.

Add to that the braindead vodafone menus to check your balance, and you can see why a lot of 111 pocket calls happen IME...

My grandparents used to have an old Alcatel One Touch brick that they basically never used as they couldn't work the damn thing.

Sorted them out with an 1110i each and now they are set. They actually leave the phones turned on and use them, both for calling and texting, and the best thing was they worked out how to use it all by themselves, I didn't even need to show them the first time (Not like the Alcatel, which they needed retraining on every couple of months).

IMHO, a simple Nokia, like the 1110i is the way to go as they are just so intuitive to use!
