Just received:

Young kiwis are some of the most digitally savvy in the world, embracing all the latest gadgets, technology and social media apps to stay connected to their mates.

Now, Vodafone’s launching Vodafone Mates – an innovative suite of products, rewards and experiences designed for young New Zealanders, giving them even greater control and flexibility over how they use their smartphones.

“We’re incredibly excited to be announcing Vodafone Mates,” said Delina Shields, Vodafone’s head of segment marketing. “It’s going to be totally different to anything people have seen from Vodafone before, and it’s going to deliver the innovation, freedom and flexibility our young customers are searching for, so they can stay in touch with their mates, their way.”

Everything about Vodafone Mates will be youth-orientated, engaging with teens and young adults through innovative products and imaginative real-life experiences that celebrate kiwi mateship - everything down to its signature hashtag #gottalovemates.

The centrepiece will be a search to find New Zealand’s Best Best Mate – a kiwi prepared to maroon themselves on a barge in the Auckland Harbour for a week in August, so three of their friends can party it up on a tropical island in Fiji.

“Vodafone Mates is all about helping kiwis connect with their closest mates, and we’re going to have a lot of fun bringing that to life with our search for New Zealand’s Best Best Mate. On top of this, we’re announcing something really exciting in Prepay,” Ms Shields said.

From today, Vodafone Mates will deliver New Zealand’s first truly flexible Prepay plan, allowing customers to dial up or down their data, TXTs, and minutes to suit their needs. There are more than 160 plan combinations people can choose from – all at the touch of a button, via the My Vodafone app.

Ms Shields said structured Prepay plans, with a set amount of minutes, data and TXTs, were extremely popular with New Zealanders, but didn’t always fit the needs of young kiwis, with growing appetite for data over minutes and TXTs.

“Our customers are looking for much more flexibility in Prepay, so they can design a plan that suits them,” Ms Shields said. “Vodafone Mates is all about delivering that flexibility, and we think young kiwis are going to love it.”

Vodafone Mates will also offer a range of rewards and experiences, including a whopping 500MB data bonus every time customers under 25 tops up $20 or more on Vodafone Mates Prepay. That equals up to 5,000 snaps, or 2,000 Instagram uploads or 250 minutes of WhatsApp calling.

Some of us Oldies would rather have data than minutes :( I feel slighted. Or even discriminated against

<- don't ask me where I am - I haven't a clue: its a tech thing ;)
Housewife computerer: not particularly great at either.
And don't take me too seriously.

Same - and I doubt I'd be keen on signing up to a product or service which is designed so that "Everything about Vodafone Mates will be youth-orientated"!

It would be great if these basic pre-paid plans across all the key providers allow for such a flexible selection of minutes/texts/data... I'd be happy to sacrifice a good chunk of the former two for more of the latter...

Good idea Vodafone. Go after the demographic with the least disposable income and exclude those with the most. Now if 2D, Skinny or Spark go after those who feel excluded (yet again)........

Umm, I got the impression that she was saying that with tongue in cheek! Perhaps I misread it, though...

As a general point, it's interesting how much marketing attention goes on the younger demographics, given the relative lack of disposable income. Witness the focus (if not obsession) with these younger age groups with TV advertising (which is used as an excuse to drive TV programming) - those older age groups, which do have the cash to hand, are rarely the focus...

No expert on any of this but could it be because young people grow up and a bunch of them are not the same discerning tech educated customers you find around geekzone but are instead emotively driven by brand loyalty and an unwillingness to go out and find alternative deals as adults? (Wow what a run on sentence. Oh well.)

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

OR, you could just say that maybe Vodafone has noticed that they don't provide a plan that youngsters want, and are filling the gap. Complaining about it is like complaining that your favourite car company has released a car aimed at youngsters, and you're ignoring the ones that are aimed at you, and are bitter that the new one can't take three kids, a dog and a bootload of camping gear.

You folks complaining... Have you visited the site to create your plan?

What am I missing here? I visited their website and designed a plan with 2GB data (plus a 500MB for every $20 topup) including 50 mins voice and unlimited SMS - total cost is $38.

This would fit most of what you folks want right?

It's probably the

UNDER 25? SCORE 500MB OF DATA EVERY TIME YOU TOP UP $20

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I did that now too.

Has 30 day renewal instead of 28 on Vodafone x. Has carryover data up to limitations, with conditions. Has boosts for data for short times for few dollars. There are conditions attached to that 500mb bonus data on $20 top up, lasts for 30 days or until you top up again.

Overall looks quite good. Would prefer a bigger cap on data carryover.

Anyone notice if it has casual usage / overage after allocations used?

Interesting plan, Personally as with the X plan, i still see the smart with rollover more effective in the long run.
