What can I get away with running Asterisk on?

I've got it running just fine in a VPS instance, but I'd kinda like a cheap appliance version for a half dozen extensions with little traffic.

Thoughts?

The Pi will do it nicely. I've had an audio bridge running on the Pi with 6 participants and it was using ~15% CPU.

Don't expect it to be able to do transcoding, tho

Ok so excuse my newbi-ness here... transcoding means that I need to set up my whole network to be end to end codec right?

So, I choose 711ua on everything including the interface with 2talk right?

Well, as long as you're devices all talk the same codec, you're fine. It will negotiate them in the order you specify in Asterisk. Eg, if you tell Asterisk you prefer uLaw, and your trunks and endpoints all support that codec, it should just choose it.

If you however force the 2talk trunk to g729 and set the devices to prefer uLaw, it will transcode. I'm not an expert on this however. Someone else may be able to clarify further/correct any mistakes in my understanding.

P.s. If you're not an expect on Asterisk, I would be very cautious with what and how you expose this box to the internet. You DO NOT want to get it hacked.

Raspbx wil do wat u want no problem. There is some wrk on 729 for raspbx but use g711 for asterisk and your provider and u wil b fine. Transcoding wil bite you eventually but thats the Pi hardware not asterisk. Look into beaglebone if u wan more power. As long as yr network is sound the pi is awesome for wat it is.
