Do you hold any student data? Personally identifiable information? Is any of it in those user devices? If the answer to any of that is yes, then the resource and effort is immaterial next to the consequences of data loss, especially when the media identifies how the tech was managed.

Not wishing to fearmonger, but it's a real risk. I used to run IT in tertiary sector, if anything mentioned above gives you more than a mild tingle in any internal organ, then you should do the work now to protect yourself later (and I mean yourself.... it's easier to blame a breach on IT rather than the leadership or culture).

Business Premium will give you everything you need if you can splurge for it (or an education plan thats equivilent?) as others have mentioned you can then use Entra ID, Conditional Access, Intune/Autopilot, Defender for Endpoint etc

Create a random MS account, login, create a new local user accout (with admn access), logout, login to new local account, remove MS account from computer.

There are some other workarounds too, but this one is probably the most simple.

Or during setup, Shift + F10 to open command prompt, then OOBE\BYPASSNRO. Windows 11 will restart, and ask you to make a local account.

bagheera:

you say you moved storage to SharePoint, so I am guessing your MS license is not just an exchange online - what license is it?

Good question - I am not sure how to answer that.

Yes we have Sharepoint/Exchange/Teams all the office apps.

The Licenses show as:

  • Exchange Online

  • Microsoft Fabric

  • MS Power automate

  • Office 365 A3 for faculty

We are a small educational provider - but dont provide MS services for students (fortunately).

3 questions

Tell me you not paying exchange online and o364 a3 for the same people as a3 has exchange online in it

2 you have a real backup and I do not mean ms as they do not backup your data / mail that is for you to sort

3 ask how much is the difference between office 365 a3 and Microsoft 365 a3 as if it not to much difference in price

And if you do not have a real IT person I suggest you get someone in to do audit on your it and what should be done

To be honest - it all sounds like a lot or resources to implement for little real gain on our part with around 10 users.

I will do a bit of research on Intune and Entra.

Not anymore, or soon anyway. That is or has been deprecated. Can't recall which.

https://roundcube.net/

(you need an own domain name and to be very carefully with DKIM, SPF and DMARC - use a test FQDN for the first setup, not the intended productive FQDN)

Just don't you're making life extremely hard for the next person that looks after IT.

Nope sir, it's my own dynamic office, I'm the IT and my freelancers are happy here so far. Reasonably and fair paid specialized IT students who also want to learn and earn something in practice. 😎

Great for you, but not a solution that I'd recommend for 99% of businesses.

In a global corporation, I experienced 35 years of Microsoft, SAP and the introduction of the Google suite, and was even an "ambassador" - all of which may have been trendy in their day, but as a former end user who has suffered, I am convinced that the direct application of IT will be faster and more agile than these (now) dinosaurs.

This is the answer. If you are a non-profit, there are 10 licenses available for free.
