lchiu7: Well I have had a mixed experience. I had 3 machines and a Surface to upgrade and so checked on their progress.

Rather than break my main machines I did the upgrade on a unused older machine which is an AM2 dual core, 3G currently running Win 8.1 Pro (64 bit) on a Sandisk SSD.

I found this folder on my HD

C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows

and fired up the setup program in this folder.

It went on its merry way, installing Windows 10 and rebooting several times.

When it finally came up it was in 1024x1080 graphics whereas before I had it running in 1920x1080 with an older (I admit) Nvidia Geforce 8400GS card. I could not set the 1920x1080 resolution so tried to find Nvidia drivers. There are none for Windows 10. So I tried the Windows 8.1 drivers and after some futzing around they seemed to work and I got back 1920x1080 which is what I need for my monitor.

The other three machines I have folders in various states and I'm not sure they are ready for installation. I will wait.

Not having tried the technical preview this is new to me. It seems fine at the moment but this machine is pretty basic with only Windows, Office and Chrome on it. The other machines have a lot more software and I am reluctant to migrate them as I need them for work!

footesouljaa: anyone with a nvidia gpu having problems with windows 10? read that the updates were interfering with drivers.

I installed the new drivers then I think windows update installed it's own, restarted and it's fine now.....for now...

dacraka: I think "Something Happened" error message means that you switched to 64bit mode in the removable media installer, then played around with the dropdowns above it, which actually resets the 64bit back to 32bit in my case! So you probably downloaded the 32bit version. Try selecting the dropdown options in the USB/ISO creator top down, then don't change them. Make sure that 64bit is still selected just before you click the next step.

Those are just my thoughts on why "Something Happened", anyway - I could be wrong but that is what happened to me.

Unfortunately the USB installer asked me for my product key, entered it in and it said it was the wrong product key!

Looks like I will just have to wait for the automatic update :S

Did you boot off this USB to do the upgrade? If so it won't work. You need to run setup.exe on the stick while you are logged in to the copy of Windows you wish to upgrade. If you computer is set to boot from USB, make sure to remove the stick during the first reboot :)

I ran the setup.exe within Windows 8.1 and it asked me for my original product id :S

was it the right chipset type and right edition and on an activated PC?

ie you didn't run the 64bit setup on a 32bit install or a version of Windows licensed by Volume Licensing or Enterprise?

I don't know what the virtual wireless adapter is doing, it's nothing I've knowingly set up. In device manager I also have DW1501 Wireless-N Half-Mini Card and a couple of Bluetooth Devices.

I discovered this too, pretty annoying

I want to try use Edge fro an extended period of time but the effort it'd take to manually move my bookmarks over from Chrome is a bit too much for me to bother.

I imported my bookmarks from Chrome, unfortunately don't have access to the computer currently to check the exact steps to do it, but I'm fairly certain it was in the bookmark section to the top right.

I'll post up the process tomorrow if no one has success finding it for themselves

In the top right hand corner click on the three lines (Hub), then click Import favourites. The options I see are IE and Chrome.

Ah the first time I tried it didn't work cos Chrome wasn't an option, much better now

Edit: It imported them in reverse order! So the left-most bookmark in Chrome is now the right-most! Rather annoying haha

I got the "something wrong error" (twice) I had windows 8.1 with media centre.

I manually uninstalled media centre did a reboot and the upgrade worked the next time...

I've run into issues upgrading my Surface Pro 3. Upgrading via the reservation tool/Windows Update has now failed 5 times, and has unhelpfully refused to say what went wrong. But each time it has re-downloaded the files, which can take 30-60 minutes each time. So I downloaded the ISO and made a USB drive, but it asks for the product key. The product ID in System Information doesn't work (filled with "invalid" characters like 0 and OEM), and even using Magical Jelly Bean didn't work - the key it offered up didn't work either.

So I'm stuck - the automatic upgrade route isn't working, and it seems I'm not allowed to upgrade via the ISO. Any suggestions?

Just burn to dvd or a USB, why wait for your turn?
Can confirm using the windows 7 USB DVD Download to create a bootable USB from a windows 10 ISO works fine.

Just noticed a 29GB windows.old folder in c:

Make sure you run disk clean up with the "Clean up system files"

Then select previous windows update
Temporary windows installation files
& windows upgrade log files

I don't really want to waste 32GB on an SSD for nothing...

I notice a new Windows Update this morning, it must have just come in as I had run the Windows Update earlier for another update

Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7
This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the lates version of Windows.

On my 64bit PC it is KB2952664

Maybe explains there seems to be some people having problems upgrading and they are trying to fix it

Ive had a report to say my PC is good to go.... but nothing else has happened. Downloaded setup files from the site and chose the upgrade option and just get "something happened" and stops. COntinue waiting...
