nathan: can you turn UAC off

I went into UAC settings and was able to change it to "Never notify".

and then the Media Creation Tool would make you an ISO/USB?

No. Then nothing happened. Again. No new processes or applications appear in Task Manager, no spinning wheel or hourglass, just nothing. So I turned UAC back on.

download it on another PC?

create another user and try to download it from that profile?

I'll try the different user, thanks. I've already tried on both computers here, Win 7 64 Pro and Win 8.1 Home. I will try my wife's profile on the 8.1 laptop and see what happens.

joker97: you run "setup" from the USB from within windows, and it should start the upgrade

Finally that worked for me thank you

That said what am I unhappy about

1. My confirmed and will be notified upgrade never arrived
2. When I tried the upgrade program I got the blue screen with "something wrong" msg
3. I then created a usb using the media creation tool to create the bootable image. That didn't work either for an in place upgrade as when it said remove media and reboot it simply booted off the hard drive back to Win7
4. I then tried joker97's tip and started making progress but learnt not take the option to get updates during the install as it just did nothing for 45 mins so I gave up on that
5. Finally after running setup from the usb and not selecting updates it installed smile

All in all how on earth does MS expect lay people to do an upgrade ?!

Reservation upgrades are being staged with a staggered rollout over the coming days and weeks.  Not every one gets it on July 29

Lay people would just use their PC like normal and the upgrade would pop up to say its ready, when its time and then install.

Thank you for the reply

Well then imho the comms could have been a lot better, how about something in the Get Win10 icon that said "please note it may take a few days or weeks but if you can't wait click here" ?

I did wait three days and many will assume the Get Win10 simply isn't working

good feedback, I'll pass it on that there needs to be more notification

already
the Get Windows 10 app says

"Upgrade when you get a notification that Windows 10 has downloaded and is ready for you"

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq

When will I get my free upgrade?

If you reserved your free upgrade, it’s on the way.

You’re part of the largest software upgrade event ever and we’re managing it so everyone has a great experience.

Your notification to upgrade could come as soon as a few days or weeks.

Absolutely can’t wait? Tech savvy users can use the Media Creation Tool to install immediately on one or multiple devices.

And you can always check your upgrade status in the Get Windows 10 app.

It's been a while since I've used cmd, did I do this right?

Nothing happened, fwiw.

Yeah looks right to me (assuming you have a 64bit CPU). Sadly...

Well, I finally found a solution to my toucpad scrolling issue: find an old version of the Synaptics drive, jump through a few hoops to install it, then hope the update hiding tool actually works so that WU doesn't reinstall the broken driver.

In the last 10 hours since then, I've experienced a number of other annoyances:
- First BSOD I've experienced in ~30 months
- Windows Update repeatedly installing the broken Synaptics driver (after using the MS tool to hide the update)
- Having to disable "fast startup" before I was able to access the BIOS to boot from USB
- Booting to an empty black screen with mouse cursor - seems to be an issue with Nvidia cards, but I'm not sure why it took Windows almost two hours to install the driver after a reformat (it took ~10 minutes when I formatted again)
- Discovering that the media keyboard software doesn't work on a fresh install, while it did work after upgrading from Windows 7
- Finding out that Intel stopped supporting my wireless card circa Windows 8 launch, and that the MS driver doesn't seem to support N mode
- Search not returning shortcuts for any of the programs I've installed since formatting
- Search showing a "We're getting search ready" message hours (after I removed the Users directory and rebuilt the index)

In other words, a bunch of stupid little things that leave me thinking the launch was a bit premature.

Sideface: The MS tool fails more often than not.

It worked on three out of three PCs for me, so not sure where the "fails more often than not" comes from. Based on the number of activations I've seen mentioned around it's working for millions of people.

kiwifidget: No joy for me trying to upgrade my Win8.1Pro+MC today.
Multiple failed attempts in WU to install Win10.
I downloaded the UK-PRO-BOTH ISO.
After mounting the ISO and running setup.exe as Admin the purple window comes up.
"Preparing" goes to 100%
Selected "Not at the moment" for Get Important Updates, left the little box in the corner unticked. NEXT.
ACCEPT the license terms
Wait during "Making sure you're ready to install"
Click CONFIRM that Media Centre will be toast
Making sure PC has enough space (there is 46GB free on C: which it doesn't complain about)
"Ready to Install - (tick)Install Win 10 Pro and (tick)Keep Windows settings, personal files and apps"
click INSTALL
"Installing Windows 10" - doesnt even get off 0% before I get "Something happened. Windows 10 installation has failed"

Repeated the exercise with saying Yes to downloading updates but same result.
Have redownloaded the ISO (thankfully switched to an unlimited plan back in Feb).
Subsequent retries all end in same failed result.

I though this was supposed to be the surefire way to go.

Any thoughts?

Remove Media Centre from the Windows 8.1 install and try again.
