Got a bunch of older desktops that need replacing in a corporate environment. Pretty much all the users do run XP, Office 2003 and IE6. The plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 and Office 2007 and IE8 or FF. That is about the extent of their use.
Thinking rather than buy a ton of new dual core desktops etc. why not get a good Netbook (like the new NB200 from Toshiba) with 1-2G RAM and whatever hard drive they have. HD space isn't an issue since most users would store things on a file share or in a EDMS. I am sure from a performance point of view they will be fine running those apps and even if the users open up a ton of windows, it should be fine. No OSH issues since all users have external keyboard and LCD monitors anyway.
That way I have a low cost way to provide all users the potential of mobile use without compromising performance for daily work and without having to buy expensive laptops. I would also purchase a few USB optical drives to share amongst the users when they needed them. Most don't need those drives for daily use.
When Win7 comes out, I would look at upgrading the XP to that and skip Vista completely.
I am waiting to get a NB100 (which performance wise isn't much slower than a NB200 if at all) to install Office 2007 on and see how it works but just wondering what GZ members think about this. I think I could get the NB200's for well under $1000 while a HP desktop is probably around $1400.
