Not sure what the technical term is, but we're having problems with our PC 'stalling' after being left idle for more than a few minutes.

Basically the routine goes like this: start up pc no worries, can surf the net & load programs all quickly and as it should be, leave the pc at idle for 5 minutes (with programs running or not, it makes no difference) then on returning to PC, the mouse pointer may move a little, but nothing opens / moves / actions and we have lost control.

While its stuck like this, I can hear the HDD whirring a little, but its so stuck that even a CTRL+ALT+DELETE does nothing, only solution seems to be restarting pc. On restart we get the whole 'disk needs checking', this is our routine as its been for a week or too.

Have tried multiple virus checks, ccleaner, disk defrag & clean up.

I checked the event log, and found this:

anyone know what to make of the error message:
"The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, is not ready for access yet."

Source: Disk
Event ID: 15

and another error message:
"The Cardex service failed to start due to the following error:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

Source: Service control manager
Event ID: 7000

Have tried a google with no luck, so any help much appreciated.

Machine is:
Windows XP home, service pack 3
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
2.17GHz, 2.00GB of Ram

I've never heard of this error before, but try disabling any power management options (power saver, screen saver) and make sure all are on "Never" or similar.

Then see if it keeps happening.

My hunch is that it has something to do with Hard Disks to sleep or ...Screen saver problem...

EDIT:
oh, also, what's your D drive? CD/DVD RW/ROM?
You describe a file already exists error, but which file is it trying to write, do you know, or could find out?

thanks for your reply,

All power saving management options are set to 'never'.

D drive is HDD.

No idea what file is trying to be written to, how do I find this out?

I see, I don't know how to check for which file either, sorry
(might be a scan log in C:\ but I can't remember which version of windows did that)

Is the D: HDD new or has been there for a long time? (more than 1month, lets say)
What about any new programs?

Sorry about the many questions, trying to narrow down on where it could be caused
Oh, next time you leave your computer idle, leave task manager focused with processes sorted by "CPU" column, like in this screenshot.

It's a long shot, but might help us narrow down what is happening

HDD is 6 years old, original one since PC was made.

New programs are Tomtom GPS software, DSE webcam drivers, and a program to stop windows genuine advantage notifications

So your machine has 2 HDDs installed?

What is on each one?,  XP on C?, apps on D:?

Have you tried to start XP in safe mode, (push F8 after POST and before windows starts)?

Grab a copy of Autoruns and have a look at what is actually loading and running on your machine
