Hi there i would like to know if i am able to hide my laptop from the network so that others connected cannot see it when they are connected to my network

My laptop is currently running windows 7 and there is another 2 laptops running windows 7 and a pc running 7 and xp

I would like my laptop to be hidden so that others cannot see it but i can see them if it is possible

can you expand a bit on what you mean by "others can not see it"?

is it that you dont want ppl accessing your file shares, dont want ppl to be able to ping you, or not want ppl to even be able to resolve your computer's ip address?

a firewall (even the built in windows one) can prevent file sharing and ping replies.

I would like to be able to see others on my network but them not being able to visibly seeing mine when i am connected

I dont want them seeing mine when they click on network and it shows my laptop name and all others connected and i dont want them to be able to access my shared folders

go into the properties of your network adaptor and uncheck the following:
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- IPv6 (used to find and define 'homegroups' in windows 7)

you might also need to go into the properties of the IPv4 protocol, select advanced, select WINS tab and select "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"

if you want to be able to connect to other compters file shares, make sure you leave the following checked:
- Client for Microsoft Networks

you also might want to enable the windows firewall (or other firewall) and configure the advanced settings to block any incoming ports. In the windows firewall ones you really want to disable are:
- Network Discovery UPnP In
- Network Discovery (NB-Datagram-In)
- Network Discovery (all the others too)
- Core Networking Neighbor Discovery rules
- Core Networking *ICMP* rules
- Core Networking *router advertisement* rules
etc..

All that so no one could see ya on your network? Sheesh, what have you got to hide??

Just don't share anything. They may see your computer but if you ain't got what to give out for them to see, they ain't gonna come knocking down your door.
