hey guys,

i've got a issue with a new wb 2tb hdd i brought. i've been trying to format for the last couple of days.
it wont let me quick format at all and comes back with a error "The format did not complete successfully".
i can run normal format on the hdd, but it hands everytime it gets to 54%.

i was able to partion and format 50% of the hdd, but the 2nd half does the above.

i have run diskpart in dos and cleaned the hdd too.

cheers

Probably a newer advanced format drive.

I suspect dos and older version of windows will fail to format it.

This might help

Are you formating as NTFS or Fat32. I think 2TB is to large for fat32 and you will need to use a command prompt to switch it to ntfs

does the drive have a letter yet?

Hu? did i do that?

? why do you need to format your hdd!

if you have windows go to computer right click select manage go to disk management right click on the thing and make (a) partition(s) - choose quick format. but doing it this way you have less options as to the cluster type and size.

in a command prompt type

FORMAT enterDriveletterhere: /FS:NTFS

so for example if it was f drive

FORMAT f: /FS:NTFS

un sure if it will work but atleast it will give out an error you can google.

let me know how it goes

if you have your self a bootable linux ubuntu live disk use gparted/partition editor in that. just make sure you format the correct disk or you will loose all your stuff. if posible disconect the hard drive your operating system is connected to or disable it in the bios.

It's a new WD 2TB drive as mentioned in his opening post.

I'd put $5 on it being an advanced format drive, he should read the link I posted earlier.

well, finally sorted it. found a website where ppl were having the exact same issues as me (down to the format stopping @ 54%).

turns out i just needed to download a third party partition program. so i downloaded Easeus and it worked first time, in about 1min.

cheers for the help guys
