Is anyone else experiencing frequent Explorer crashes since the last Windows Update (October 2010)?

It happens when you open a folder from your desktop, or if you explore a folder on My Computer, or just right-click on the desktop.

At first I thought it could be Microsoft Security Essentials (I am running the perpetual beta on my laptop), but then I noticed this happening in my Windows Server 2008 boxes as well, which are not runnin MSE and have pretty much no other pplications installed.

Anyone else?

I haven't noticed anything on my Win 7 PC at home or at work.

Have you tried removing the updates and see if you can narrow down what update is causing the issue?

Seriously, with so many updates this month I am afraid of removing any of them and causing permanent harm to this install...

Great. Now I can't close the Event Viewer - it complains I have to close all dialogs before exiting the program, but there is no dialog open, only the main window.

Yes I've seen the same issue and suspected I was seeing it after a recent Flash update, but have done no digging around to confirm that at all. I may be totally off track.

Might be already too late :(

Back to basics though,

Have you run any memory/hardware tests?
Has anything else changed on your system that might have caused it?
Are there any extra updates avalible now?

No memory tests, but this is not a blue screen - it only happens on Explorer when going through folders or double-click a folder on desktop. I will run a test later.

No other updates available.

I have been surprised what a faulty memory DIMM can cause. Not saying it is the cause in this case but always good to rule it out.

I will run a fresh set of updates when I get home and let you know.

I have been finding many explorer.exe processes sitting there whoring CPU recently. 7 last time I looked and it was making the machine a total dog.

Just installed all the latest updates, nothing broken here.

In addition to the memroy test suggestion, that I endorse, you could also try:

sfc /scannow
chkdsk
shiny new dell xps :)
ubuntu ;)

Good luck,

I know this is not a solution but after reading this I am going to wait a little as I have not installed these updates yet. Hopefully it resolves itself. It may just be the Flash beta causing it as i have read somewhere of similar issues when updating Flash.

Either that or I am imagining things which I can't necessarily rule out hehe. Good Luck to all sufferring this problem.

Haven't updated home pc yet.

What I would do:

Cause you are worried about damaging the system - take an image
then just remove updates and see if it fixes the issue, if not restore the image

once you have an image, you can muck around to your hearts content trying different things, without the worry of ruining the system!
