You mean you try to access a USB memory key but it won't show as a storage device? Check that you are using the USB port, not a USB Hub. Also, check that there's no network drives maps pointing to the same drive letter as the USB memory would be using.

I have a similar problem.

I have 2 x USB memory devices - same brand. Both show up fine on one laptop but on another laptop only one of them shows up.

Are you using Windows XP or Windows 98 (or possibly another version of Windows)?

Jump drives (small portable USB drives) are automatically detected in Windows XP, but in Windows 98 you have to install drivers for the jump drive before Windows will see it.

I have Windows XP SP2, and I've looked if network drives maps are pointing to the same letter but they aren't. My USB mass storage device is recognized by computer and I even have safely remove hardware icon in tray but I can't access it through my computer or anywhere else. I even tried to stop and start service removable storage but it didn't help.

Listen guys, I have the same problem. I but only on 1 laptop. It works fine on my second laptop. Both are have Windows XP SP2 both are gateways and both have the same windows update. I can assure you guys that it is not a hardware problem. Device Manager detects the hardware correctly and appears to be working correctly. What I have been able to see is that the mass storage device is not getting mapped a Drive Letter. This is true with all mass storage devices. I have tried 2 different pen Drives, SanDisk model and a PNY model and both are recognized in device manager but are not getting mapped a drive letter. I also tried a SONY memory stick on my media port and it also gets recognized but not mapped. To verify that these storage devices are not getting mapped you can Right click on my computer -> Select Manage -> Click on Disk management under Storage and there you will see the Storage Device but without an assigned drive. You can even manually assign a drive leter but when you open My Computer it is still not seen. I can access the recently mapped storage device by right-clicking on the device in Disk Management on the second try of an open attempt. The first time will give me an error that the drive does not exist but the second time will open it and access it. All I can see is that the issue is a software problem, and definetly rule out hardware problem. Anyone have suggestions??

Open a cmd prompt and check "net use" to see if there is any network drive assigned to then next drive letter.

I have had the same problem before and it seems that the drive map manager overlooks any manually assigned drive maps. So when you attach a USB drive it connects it but somehow fails to let Explorer see it due to a conflict with a previously manually assinged drive.

If you should assign any network mapped drives then use a drive letter well above the internal HD and CD/DVD so to give the drive map manager room to do its thing without tangling with any manually assigned drives as it seems a bit lame in dealing with that situation.

Ok, I tried "net use" in my cmd window and it displays that "there are no entries in the list" I am still having the problem of getting Explorer to display my pen drive letter.

hey analogengineer!!! wow you got me going on this...thank you
you more or less said OK here's something......
Right click on my computer -> Select Manage -> Click on Disk management under Storage and there you will see the Storage Device but without an assigned drive.
You can even manually assign a drive letter but when you open My Computer it is still not seen.
However, Right click it and make a shortcut which will be placed on the desktop. This can now be accessed to read and write.
and if you right click for properties and then "find target" MyComputer will open and then a drive letter will appear which gives access to the drive. You now have a drive letter in MyComputer.

i recently had the same problem...my memorex memory stick wouldn't show up under my computer and i'm sure it wasn't a hardware problem because when i looked under disk management, the drive was there and it would also show up on my tray. i did all the necessary procedures to detect if the drive letter was used by another drive but found none. then i had problems with this program called daemon tools. if any of you have had this program installed, this may be the cause. in my case it had something to do with the sptd layer which is required for daemon tools to run. if you uninstalled daemon tools, this layer remains in your registry keys so this may interfere with your mass storage device drive letter if this has the same drive letter.

in order to disable this you must boot into safe mode, click start and go to "run". type in regedit and browse to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sptd
when you've found that, look for "start" on the right and right click it and click "modify", set the value to 4 to disable it.
now restart and see if you storage device appears under "my computer"....this worked for me
if you are planning on using daemon tools again you must re-enable the sptd layer by changing "start" back to a value of 0
hope this helps

Hey pokherface, thank you so much for the information. I was able to solve my problem. It turns out that SPTD.sys was intalled by Alcohol 120% and it was version 1.24 of the SPTD file. I have updated it to version 1.25 and it works fine when enable. All my removable storage drivers are back in place. Here is the link to update your SPTD file: http://85.17.36.30/SPDT/SPTDinst-v125-x86.rar

Thanks again for the hint.

I found out that the latest Daemon Tools come with this updated driver. In fact they say on thir main page that if you don't have this version or newer they won't provide support. It must be that bad.

I am installing now, and will reboot soon.
