I wanted to set up a networked drive to store files uploaded from my PC to be viewable on my TV. I tried setting up a Samba share but my TV couldnt connect so I set up a miniDLNA server and that works fine, my TV can see that.
Question is, how do I access the server to upload files form the PC? When I click on it, it opens in Media Player with no way I can see of transferring files.

what programe did you set up the server with?

my DLNA server automatically updates its content when i add files to the folders that the server is sharing.

Samba usually works well enough.
Did you check you have shared the desired folder ok?

The Kodi/SMB wiki is worth a look...

I followed this guide. I guess I am not understanding the concept of shares properly. I can see the server on the PC but the only way I can  get files onto it is to unplug the HDD and plug it in to the PC, transfer the files and reconnect to the Raspberry Pi, not what I want.

You will need Samba to set up remote file-system access, such as allowing writing to your disk.
This will require setting read/write permissions on specific locations etc.
Your DLNA server is a media server, which DLNA clients will read and stream from, not so commonly used for writing to, in my experience with it.

all that seems to be doing is sharing files from the hard drive, it doesnt give you any functionality to write to the hard drive.

short of being able to "share" the hard drive as a folder, not media server on the network, and have it with write permissions, i think you will jsut have to keep plugging it into the pc to use.

I am not sure if I have the wrong end of the stick, but...

If you already have the files on your PC on your home network, why don't you share the desired folder on your PC.
Install openelec or osmc (both run kodi) on your Rpi.
Hook the pi up to an HDMI port on your tv - the Rpi is connected to your home network.

Start up the pi and add link to the shared folder on your networked PC.
Sit back and enjoy.
Kodi is really good when hooked up to an HDMI-CEC TV - Which is nearly every TV. The TV remote can work the kodi menu.
Just note that cec is called various things by different manufacturers. Anynet - Samsung. Vieralink - Panasonic etc.

The files (photos) are not stored on the PC, they are stored on an external HDD that I  have  plugged into the Pi.
Photos are downloded from the camera to the PC for editing then I wanted to send them off to the external drive for viewing on the TV.
I set up a miniDLNA server on the Pi that the TV could see just fine but its how do I get new photos onto the drive without unplugging and replugging etc? I thought I could share the external drive on the Pi but I cant see how to do that.

You must be blind then as there is a SMB/Linux doc via the Kodi/Windows link above and you already claim to have set up a samba share, if so post the etc/samba/smb.conf file, maybe google Ubuntu SMB. Google has over half a million references to such.
