Hi there, I was given a copy of iDeneb 1.4 to put osx leopard on a virtual machine. Install all went fine but I have no clue what drivers to use. It lists none that are for my hardware (compaq cq62-251TX) with intel core i3 at 2.23Ghz, 4gb ram, 320GB HDD with win7 Home Prem. installed from factory. Do I look for drivers for my computers hardware? Or specific ones for VMWare?

You will be looking for specific drivers for the virtual hardware used in vmware.

Virtual network adaptor types used are here, not sure what the vga is.

oh crap, that's the ESX server product network adaptor page I just linked...

but yeah, you will need drivers for the virtual hardware.

You wouldnt happen to know what drivers I need and how I could install them? I cant boot to the OSX desktop due to this issue.

installing (hacking) os X on a PC is an incredibly tricky process that requires very specifically created drivers ... no experience with doing OS X on VMware ...

perhaps try insanelymac.com ?

Ohk I'll have a look there. I've gotten it working on PearPC before, that was with an entirely different computer and the build was pre-set up with a pre configured VHDD. Thanks anyways

Dont install it on vmware, it'll run very slow as well you will not get qe/ci enabled which will limit you to allot of things.
You'd be far better dual booting using the ideneb bootloader.
Go to insanelymac and make sure you've got compatible hardware. And see if your able to do a vanilla install on your hardware (using an osx retail disc by patching it) it will run alot better,

I got OSX (Ideneb) going on a virtual machine on my PC.
But I used virtualbox. I seem to remember it just installed and worked pretty much.
Maybe try virtualbox?

Ok I'll try virtual box. And I have tried installing iDeneb on my computer before and it didnt end nicely. Lost everything on the HDD because it messed up my main partition

I see things have moved on a bit from vmware, but anyway.. I looked at some of the instructions and information over on wiki.osx86project.org late this evening. A significant level of custom configuration is required. Also check out the home page for information specific to each release version. There are virtualbox instructions there also. None of it looks exactly straightforward, so I think you will need to read through many of the guides to find out what kind of process you are in for.

Thought from memory they added osx support to virtualbox a while ago.
Therefore - it *should* pretty much just work.

Dont seem to recall having to do too much to get it working.
I still have it installed (and it works) - dont think I kept notes though...

Damn. Well I looked through like every guide on the net and not one talked about what drivers to install on VMWare or VB. What type of partition table / format did you use? I tried using GUID and the one so windows could use the same HD, but it didnt change anything. Still unable to boot.

It would have been around a year ago - So I dont recall what I put in when installing it...

Hmm - I will do it now....

Regarding the virtualbox settings - just create a new virtual machine - select the OS as OSX.

The version as osx server.

Create a 20GB disk and give it some memory - 1GB for example.

Then set the 'cd' to the the ideneb iso image and start it up.

You should at least get the startup screens showing.

You can select the languange - the mouse seems to just work.

Then once in the OSX setup you have to set up the 'disk'

So you should see the bit of disk you allocated - you need to use the osx disk manger to create a partition.

Just create a partion that uses the whole disk.

Once you exit that screen the next osx setup screen should show the partition that was just created.

I dont know much about OSX and just followed my nose.

One gotcha.. As soon as you get OSX going it races off and starts downloading BIG updates - disable that until you have decided if you actually want to keep the virtual machine. It chews up more download than Windows!

OK - did a quick run through.
Seems that I needed to select "Kernel voodoo" when you start going through installation.

It gives you a list of packages to incorporate - and you (well I) need that one.
There are also other patches for video and soundcard etc - have a play with them once you have something that works.

Once its installed the other thing you seem to have to do is to go into VirtualBox settings / System tab and uncheck "enable EFI" - or it doesnt seem to want to boot.

Neat! I did what you said, and disabled EFI. Booted absolutely perfectly! Thanks heaps. Gotta start searching for sound drivers now and graphics card drivers. Do I look for ones for my laptops hardware or for VMWare?

Worked for me.
Make sure the virtualbox has the audio set to Windows direct sound and ICH AC97.

Did it work for you?

PS did you turn off the OSX software updates until you have it the way you want?
