I'm annoyed by marketing emails that I am having to unsubscribe to as the result of attending a conference

80% of the unsubscribe links take me to a page where I have to jump through a hoop or two and enter my email "preferences" and email address to receive NO emails from said marketers.

If I'd known of the deluge of emails I'd receive as a result of attendance, I would not have gone.

Had that happen a few years ago for a conference I attended on behalf of my employer. One of those ones where in addition to the various topics under discussion, there were a bunch of vendors present with displays set up, attempting to sell their wares. Following the conference I was swamped with marketing emails from every vendor present.

I complained to the organiser that I considered it was unethical to pass on attendees details without advice or permission. I did eventually get an apology from them in a "sorry you took offence at our actions" kind of way, which I always consider a non-apology, because it puts the focus back on me as the complainer, rather than them as the perpetrator.

In other words, 'everyone else deluged by spammy emails thought it was fine, it's just you'. That attitude is annoying, especially when you pay to attend these events.

Presumably, attendance fees weren't a big proportion of the conference budget. So attendee lists were seen as a goodie to provide to the stall-holders, who presumably did pay substantially, and who were wanted at next year's conference. If a few spammees didn't attend the next conference, then there's no great loss, and there's no need to even make a serious pretense of being sorry to them. If you aren't paying for the product, the you *are* the product.

I get annoyed when I ring up a company to ask for a simple price inquiry and they turn it into a database gathering exercise. What is your email? You don't need to know that!

I'm more annoyed by companies who provide no option to get a pricing quote except four 20 minute sales calls.

I use numbers since its less likly that they will see it for what it is and strip it off.

For really bad things I used my domain and just delete the address when done so they will reject, but with the loss of free google apps, its become an actual cost to have that account for a few weeks before deleting it.

Use aliases instead? Those don't count towards your user subscriptions.

Schemes peddled to the public as "creating x,000 new jobs", which almost always means "pumping in 20,000 jobs' worth of taxpayer money to create 1,000 new jobs".

Also, creating new jobs is in many cases a pretty pointless measure of success. Putin has been hard at work creating new jobs since late February but I doubt anyone sees that as a positive indicator.

The Auckland council sending out payment requests in PDF form which have been cunningly generated so that it's impossible to copy and paste the account details and reference numbers from the PDF to the bank payment form (tried three different PDF readers). As a result you have to manually retype a series of long strings of numbers into different fields and hope you didn't typo anything in the process.

That's exactly the type of conference it was - industry conference, that could only be signed up to as an industry employee, using the work email address. Nowhere did it explicitly state that they'd farm out my details to every vendor present.

I've been to this specific conference a number of times in the past and not had this level of intrusive SPAM.

Or nothing actually happens.
So did those 5000 government linked jobs actually go to chch from Auckland to support the chch recovery the government of the day trumpeted in 2011...

Reporters should quiz politicians about these sorts of things when announced... Ie you have previously announced x y z. "While your here what about what you said....." and bring up how previous governments made similar announcements and several years later nothing happened. It will remind public there and then that politicians announce things all the time which dont happen

Also to companies who announce similar schemes for warm fuzzies.

That would suck. Seems to be a bit of pole replacement / repairs going on today as I heard someone in Karitane saying power was going off.

Auckland Council Inorganic Rubbish Collection contractors.

The system is quite simple - book online, follow instructions, await collection.

  • Make sure it's not on the footbath or berm or it won't be collected
  • if on your property  - make sure gates are unlocked and access is easy
  • make notes on booking system to accurately explain where rubbish is piled
  • no more than cubic metre of waste

So...7am rolls around today - the day of collection.

Contractors are out and about - I can hear them. 2 Trucks and several burly blokes.

They pause at the end of our driveway (I am working from home, so can see this happen), then drive off.

I hear them collecting from neighbours, so think that calling the council will enable them to quickly turn around and collect our small pile of refuse.

I get disconnected.

I see them on the other side of the road, so run out and chase the truck up the road.

Keeping a safe distance, so as not to scare anyone, I make an enquiry as to whether we are supposed to have our rubbish collected - they confirm yes. I explain it hasn't been collected and where it is: They say the'll come back down when they finish the other side of the road and it'll be sweet as.

They drive past. Again.

I call the council. It's logged as a missed collection, but can't be rebooked until after 7pm, as the contractor will reject the job.

I have to call the council after 7pm, despite having already spoken to the contactor and the council. They can only book it after 7pm, but I have to initiate it.

Bureaucratic nonsense.

WHen they did ours, they had several different trucks for different types of rubbish. Our pile took about three passes I think (and there wasn't very much).

I reckon they'll be back.

I was amazed to see Vector (I assume) doing hotline maintenance on the power poles at the end of the street with what looked like a generator truck present to power things downstream (the scene flashed past pretty quickly so I didn't get too close a look). There's nothing here but residential properties so it seemed an impressive amount of effort to go to to avoid a disruption.
