Politics in kids sport is one of the main reasons I gave up coaching to just look after our son on his journey. The higher you get the worse it gets.

Good on your son for sticking with it through the harder times and enjoy the good times.

Watching my tiny 11 year old boy totally smash a burger almost as big as his head. I am actually not sure which thread this goes into, there is great potential, if he eats like this going forward, to become quite annoying(ly expensive!) :)

Impressive Mighty Ape. Ordered late afternoon ( via GZ link of course) items arrived Wellington next day by 12pm. Fastest courier service I’ve ever had.

Thanks for using the link. Might have been just the order that made me enough to buy something I had my eyes on.

Ordered yesterday (Friday) afternoon and saw the additional $5 Saturday delivery option but thought "Nah, if it's here on Monday it's good."

Next thing, Saturday morning the box is here.

The sole good thing about textured walls: They make it so it doesn't matter if your patching looks like it was done by Stevie Wonder.

Something I really love about hobby computing is the way elegant solutions to convoluted issues usually turn up with enough patience and digging. Sometimes it is just a matter of asking the right question, and sometimes even that can be a major creative undertaking.

So the latest challenge turns out to be converting a film with multiple subtitle languages in different files to a single MP4 file, which I have standardised my library on. The reason I chose MP4 is because it is a relatively standard and easy format to work with across multiple devices. I am not into blockbuster special effects films and I do not require exceptional audio and video fidelity, so MP4 meets my needs well.

So I have a normal video file but with it I also have an idx file and a sub file for the subtitles, which come in different languages. How can I get the one language I want onto an MP4 copy of the film?

To start with I had no idea how to do this, having never needed to do it before. So I just blind searched for ‘how to convert video with idx and sub’. Immediately I found a bunch of helpful stuff on the Video Help website, including an unusually clear and simple explanation of why subtitled videos have these two files in the first place. It turns out that this is a slightly outmoded way of doing it because the subtitles are not text at all, but pictures of text overlaid on the video. This clever idea means they will display correctly on any device that can display the video. It avoids all kinds of compatibility tangles. With the replacement of DVDs with on-demand streaming files, there is less need for this kind of solution and subtitles are increasingly text files. This means that to get a .sub subtitle onto a different file format, it first has to be converted to a text file. This means an OCR reader has to go through the entire file, converting the images to text.

With a quest like this, you usually end up following a lot of false trails before hitting on the one that works, and that happened to me but I won’t go into that here. Eventually I settled on a brilliant little free utility (I guess it’s called an ‘app’ in today’s buzzspeak) that does this job perfectly. It’s called DVDsubextractor. After loading the .sub file (the .idx file has to be in the same folder), and then choosing the desired subtitle language(s), the OCR reader moves through it, initially asking for confirmation of its reading of the letters. The more it learns, the less it asks, and pretty soon it shoots through the file very quickly. At the end it spits out an SRT text file that includes all the timings in the right places.

Once I had the SRT file, I used the free version of the excellent Any Video Converter to do the conversion to MP4 with subtitles. I expected some errors (hopefully minor) in this back and forth process, but to my surprise, I haven’t found a single one. The subtitles are perfect, the timing is perfect, the conversion is perfect. How often does that happen?

Much credit is due to the unsung geniuses, far smarter than I am, who create this kind of software magic. You really make me smile.

I've used DVDsubExtractor before. Great little utility once you've 'trained' it :)

Reading on the "something that annoys you" thread that the 70's weren't that great for some and taking a trip down memory lane, enjoying the benefit of selective memory and realising what an amazing childhood I had and how much fun I really did have back then...

I assume they didn't have room to fit the full "With freedom of white evangelical Christianity religion and everyone else can burn in hell, particularly atheists, LGBT, Muslims, Jews, etc" legend in there?

"With Freedom of Religion"... "In God We Trust". Love the ironic juxtaposition, given the implied exclusion of atheism or polytheism.

That my Mighty Ape order arrived in 1 day instead of the usual 2. So I was here for it, not while I will be at the dentist tomorrow :-)
