Inphinity:Regs: disagree completely. we have USB2 and USB3 flash drives here and the difference is huge. the USB2 ones max out around 20-25MB/sec whereas the USB3 ones are 100-120MB/s. the 100MB/s difference is enormous, especially when shifting 50GB database files around
Agree - sort of. I just did a quick test with a Corsair Flash Voyager Slider 16GB (USB3.0). 160MB file copy on then off, to local SATA 6Gbps SSD. USB 2.0 port, then USB 3.0 port.
USB 2.0 - Read 22.1MB/sec Write 15.7MB/sec
Corsair - Read 68.2MB/sec Write 19.6MB/sec
So, clearly the write speed of the flash is a limitation, but for read in particular there is a big improvement. I've got a 64GB version too, it gets slightly higher read speeds but more like 60MB/sec writes.
I have a Sandisk Extreme also, though not with me to test, but I am confident it has done both read & write at about 180MB/sec.
you can put fast flash memory on a USB2 interface and it will only go as fast as USB2 will let it
you can put slow flash memory on a USB3 interface and it will only go as fast as the flash memory will let it
this is why there is also a "Class X" distinction on SD cards, and why there is a price difference between brands.
FWIW, I used this Apacer usb flash drive in my tests above.
