I used to get sent to school with either brawn or tongue sandwich's , Can you imagine what it was like trying to swap your lunch, no fu*ken hope in hell.

So when I knew I had either of those for lunch I would sneak a packet of Gregg's jelly crystals and take that, sometimes I could swap that for a decent luncheon sandwich. Who remembers the jelly crystal eating phase in the mid 70's.

Well I never it must be true because I only used to sneak the raspberry one which is red :-)

Never 'ad brawn but I do quite like a bit of the ol' tongue from time to time.

Me mum used used to make it occasionally - used to press it under a heavy weight in a bowl - was a bit like corned beef.

Love kidneys, especially in a steak and kidney pie.

Liver I will eat but not often.

My brother who is a few years older than me, used to work after school in a Butchers shop, so on the odd occasion, he'd bring home a pigs head to make Brawn.
I never touched it though.

I grew up on a deer, sheep and beef farm. We tried to use as much of the animals we killed for the freezer as possible. So quite a lot of offal, especially if we were killing a lamb or yearling deer. No tripe though, to much work to clean. The dogs mostly ate tux. But also meaty bones and offal (cooked) that we didn't eat - e.g. livers of adult animals.

These days my favourite offal is chicken hearts and livers. Cheap and tasty. Also chicken necks.

One place I stayed in Asia, they used to crisp-fry chicken's feet, they'd kind of bubble up and end up at about the consistency of a CC - even most of the bone and toenails etc was easily munched. An excellent snack dipped in some chili sauce.

The Chinese supermarket not far from here sells packs of about 2 doz ducks' bills - all nicely arranged in the pack.

The reason offal is so expensive in NZ is it's illegal to sell offal from animals over 18 months.

This is due to cadmium buildup in our soils from use of superphosphate.

My super market used to sell chicken necks really cheaply. But over recent years the price has rocketed. Apparently they are eaten a lot of some Asian cultures, so they have put the price up as a result. We used to just give them to the cats. The other thing that use to be a cheap leftover cut, but is now really expensive, is lamb shanks.

I'd prefer either brawn or tongue over luncheon .... not quite sure what the latter actually consists of ...

Apparently the south africans consider lamb shanks a delicacy ... so I've heard. Could be Urban Myth,,,

I have to get some of those. Have Aussie guests come and stay, want to sew them onto the faces of some rabbit carcases, put them on the BBQ, tell them we haul the pests out of the local creek with a dragnet.
