More like nobody and no one.

People under 25 make up ~35% of the population and about ~10% of the linear TV audience.

Over 40% of viewers and second only to the news is significant. They aren't all baby boomers. Of the 65% over 25, 41 of those watch Reality TV in Australia, thats about 2/3 of over 25's

Is reality TV only on linear? Maybe it is, no idea. OD is available pretty much everywhere, so that's covered.

Bread and circuses require an audience. I don't watch this crap. Do you?

Depressingly enough, lots of people will. The same ones who worry about the 5G Covid vaccine, and consult their astrologer before booking holiday travel.

This is the same TV company which we all own as tax payers,  that decided to show Popstars on both TV 1 and TV 2 at exactly the same time.At least this time they didn't do that.

Reality TV is today's escapism.

Only for boomers. Who under 30 watches reality TV?

Many, many under 30 watch.

my work days are partly spent listening to my numerous 20+ y/o colleagues talking about Mafs, the kardashiclones, etc etc.

most “Boomers” I know hate the stuff and watch mostly sport or Netflix. In fact the bulk of my clients are in the over 60s age bracket and most have no idea of the currrent crop of awful reality shows (the complaints I heard the days after tvnz aired that pop stars rubbish on both channels were hilarious and numerous)

TVNZ is investing more in locally made programmes. They see locally made content as a point of difference when it comes to competing with the likes of Netflix/big streaming platforms etc. Going back to the well for old ideas that already have some form of recognition is probably seen as 'safe'.

It is easy to find watchable TV, it just isn't on the local broadcast networks. Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, even TVNZ on demand streams better stuff than is on offer on the regular broadcast schedule.

Quite interesting

https://www.statista.com/statistics/623265/popularity-reality-tv-genres-age-usa/

It is - dispels many of the assumptions made in this thread.  It's be interesting to see something specific to NZ.

They target TV ads very carefully to demographics and spending power of those who watch the program.

The NZ ads seem to support the statistica data for US viewing stats IMO.  Lots of young people watch reality TV, it's cheap to make, attracts advertisers, and is devoid of any critical content that might act counter to the advertiser's commercial needs.

The young people I know don't even have broadcast TV. Their televisions are used as YouTube monitors.

I'd agree for most under 30s I know, but I think that's probably because most of the under 30s I know are either friends of kids or kids of friends, so it's not even close to a random / representative sample.

Where is that statistic from? Even 10% seems high to me. Does that include people streaming off the free to air online platforms?

I thought the original for this was the UK show with Alan Sugar as the front man.  Originally the winner got to work for his company but after some bad publicity that changed to investing in a startup company the winner was selected / promoted.

The show will belong to the original production company, licensed out to whoever wants to make a new series, so I doubt Trump gets anything as host of a licensed production.

Earlier data I saw suggested that viewership of reality TV was significantly lower across all demographics than for quality scripted drama. However reality TV was an order of magnitude cheaper to produce so even with the lower viewership the profitability was a lot higher per hour of TV time. As you looked beyond prime to the lower quality/cheaper dramas the difference in viewership mostly disappeared but the reality stuff was still cheaper to make.
