First year of any warranty should be with the original retailer.
In many cases years 2+ are direct with manufacturer or via a 3rd party
Is this in the CGA or is this just what you'd like it to say?

This is not part of the CGA. It sounds like it's terms and conditions of sale from a specific retailer, which does not reflect the law. They would across the line for misleading consumers which has some pretty grim consequences.
That's what I thought, but I'm trying to understand where his line of thinking comes from.
"In many cases years 2+ are direct with manufacturer or via a 3rd party"
That would be the extended warranty SCAM that so many retailers try & sell us .

Read the small print on your warranty.
Thats fine it may say that but it is WRONG
I found this article on the consumer site https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/dick-smith-risks-misleading-customer

Manufacturer warranties are bordering on irrelevant, as most manufacturers offer less warranty than most people reasonably expect a product to last, and the CGA trumps their warranty.

100% wrong.
Under the consumer guarantees Act your first legal obligation is to deal with the company where you bought it from.
You have NO obligation to deal with Samsung/Microsoft/Apple/etc etc, that is the retailers problem.
ONLY where the retailer has gone out of business do you then go to the manufacturer/wholesaler/importer.
If a retailer tells you it is their "policy", ask for it in writing as that breaches the fair trading act as well as the CGA, let them know you will make a complaint, that changes attitudes pretty much instantly.
Retailers will try to fob you off as there is a cost to them packing up items, keeping track of products, etc etc and if they can foist that expense back onto you they will.
The length of "warranty" under the CGA depends on the kind of item and the quality.
A computer screen from Samsung will have 3-5 years "reasonable Life"
Parts should be available and of reasonable price, for example a car manufacturer tried to charge over $1000 for a new electronic key, they went to court and were told the maximum they could charge would be $400 as 3rd party ones could be had for less then $100.
Citizens Advice have an excellent brochure on the CGA. Learn you rights.
I was unfailingly polite but totally insistent with EBGames over my sons Xbox. They tried the "You deal with Microsoft" line until I let them know it was illegal for them to tell me that as well as "the CGA is the same as the manufacturers warranty" (found out later they thought I was a lawyer ROTFLMAO). Also, always ask for a copy of the service report, that way if it breaks down multiple times you can then have evidence of a "lemon" and get a refund.

You have 7 days "Buyers remorse" to get a refund
They also have the legal obligation to inform you of your rights under the CGA if they try and sell you an extended warranty.
My Step son bought one with their new TV, I explained to him and his GF about their CGA rights and we went and got their money back
Sales droid did not even blink when we said we wanted the money back because of the CGA.

You can NOT contract you way out of the CGA
No amount of fine print removes any of your rights under the CGA and Fair Trading Act.
Repeat offenders can cop some serious fines.

But most of the time they dont. Unfortunately .
Seems they know they can get away with it .
Every company I worked for had zero regard for the CGA , company policies pretended CGA didnt exist .
If I mentioned CGA to the companies owner/manager , just get a blank look from them.

Sales staff are sometimes FORCED to try & sell worthless Extended Warranties . Most shop sales staff will know its a money making con.
