freitasm: When I say "A Big Mac, burger only" and they reply "Is that the combo?"
Or when I say "A Big Mac combo, medium, coke no ice" and they come back with "Is this a medium or large?"
Listen to me...

Probably too busy listening to that horrible siren noise. What the hell is that?

Shoe laces.

Seriously, with all the technology in the modern world, why do we still use silly bits of string to secure our shoes to our feet?

When forum posts have a link as a reply as if it is a complete explanation.

Quote a paragraph from it at least! Then make some comments about it! It's not that hard.!!!

gzt: When forum posts have a link as a reply as if it is a complete explanation.

Even worse: When it links to a Google results page instead of an actual result.

When the topic subject is one word or completely uninformative:

  • "Help!"
  • "Windows 10"
  • "Car"

Or when people quote a full post with ten paragraphs to comment only on the last sentence.

I do this because the forum software requires you to do strange things in order not to do that. All I ever get is some mumbo jumbo about 'wrong tags', whatever they are.

If it worked like a normal word processor and you could just delete stuff without any kind of code (and many forums do work just like that - this is the only one I know of that does not) I'd cheerfully shorten quotes!

Yeah...nah! Seriously though, aside from simple velcro what would be better?

You could design a vacuum fitting system I guess but you would need pumps and batteries and airtight bags and so on and on...!

I think you're right...as irksome as laces can be, they're very effective.

Neckties. Luckily my current job doesn't require them, but what genius thought that wearing a little noose around your neck every day would be a good plan?

I've made my point about the second one already twice in this topic - so we are on the same page here. It is your Forum, I can image how frustrating it could be for you to see that happening all the time. I guess no different from having built nice playground for kids and seeing them having fun but making mess at the same time :-)

In regards to first one - I have created, introduced and enforced strict rules around email subject line structure (you can see some similarity) when I was Change Manager in one big Telco (IT/IS/Network). Arguments at the time from others were - people have to  read the whole email... Really? All 300 of them on the day? How about making decision what to read and prioritise based on the subject line. There was the Start Date, Action Required, What that was About, Emergency Level - all in a brief coded way as a part of the Subject Line.

My dad was Journalist / Newspaper Editor / Poet and Book Writer. He used to say, quote: - "kid, do not read articles, just read headlines...and you'll know it all", end of quote. He was kidding of course but there is a lot of truth in that statement...

In New Zealand - suggest reading the book by Barfoot & Thomson: "Selling Auckland". They succeeded partially because one of the pair had talent for short attractive slogans in the property adds. That captured attention.

Think about New Zealand Herald having all articles with the headlines: "Worth Reading", or "Must Read", just all of them.....How many you would read on a day?

Hope this little rant will help people helping others to improve email communication style at their workplace...and in their private life...

P.S. Disclaimer: English is my second. Regardless how hard I try to bring the message accross, there will always be misinterpretation ...

alasta: Shoe laces….. why do we still use silly bits of string to secure our shoes to our feet?

BlueShift: Neckties. …., but what genius thought that wearing a little noose around your neck every day would be a good plan?

At one workplace there was a guy who was asking me too many stereotypic questions (e.g. Vodka, KGB, you name it :-))

Those type of questions are always annoying but when he asked why I wear tie, I suddenly joked: - "That is the last resort, when we are short of the ammuniton, my friend.." He stopped asking all those annoying questions all at once...

Glad I do not have to wear neck tie any more and those 50 are collecting dust, but if I hear those annoying questions about Vodka again, bear in mind - I still have my shoe laces on :-)

jonathan18: Those who think the use of the Oxford comma should be forced upon all others.
I don't force it on others, but the Oxford comma (or serial comma) is awesome!
When I use to teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language) the only time we saw the Oxford comma was in the US teaching materials.  UK ones never had it.  As I worked for NZ and UK newspapers, we never used it there either.

Yeah, it's definitely used in the US far more. Not sure where I picked it up, but I think in most circumstances it makes more sense than not using it.
