I'm with 2 degrees for Internet. They were (as of a year ago) the only ISP that offered ip6.arpa hosts for IPv6 on UFB. Currently with Meridian for energy, since I don't have a smart meter. Used to be with Electric Kiwi before that.

freitasm: Contact 20% discount is for prompt payment, not a price discount really.

Still quite large and most of us pay on time. Energyonline still beats thats price for me as a lowish user. I ring most of the power companies every year or two for a price comparison. Just give them your ICP number on the phone and they can do a comparison on the spot.

and I am still with Vodafone cable 200/20 after all these years. I haggled and got a contract for a crazy low price.

I have to disagree with Murph's blog post, I've just run the numbers as I am now out of contract with my current power company. I am looking at the Trustpower Samsung TV deal with any 24 month contract to their 200/20 plan. I already use them for electricity and gas though my research shows I could select a different provider for electricity and gas and save myself $100 over 24 months.

Trustpower offer naked 200/20 for $114/month which is $9 more expensive than 2degrees at $105/month for the same plan (but apparently superior peering). Calculating my costs I see that this 50" TV is costing me ($100 to stay with a slightly more expensive electricity/gas supplier and $216 to go with a more expensive internet plan) $316 over 24 months which is not really a bad deal in my estimation.

Even if I picked the absolute rock bottom cheapest fibre provider (Skinny, $88/month) the TV is still costing me only $724 spread over 24 months.

Conclusion: always run the numbers for your own situation. $724 is the cheapest you can buy this Samsung for anywhere in NZ (https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=4323682) and it is a decent first foray into 4K HDR for me while the OLED burn in issues are ironed out.

Yes it depends on your situation. For me, it'll end up costing $112/mo more being with Trustpower based on my power use and price on their low user plan ($2688). If I combine Broadband in with this too (I pay $105/mo for Gigabit currently) then Trustpower, at 200/200Mbit (a slower speed) is charging me $134/mo which is $696 over the 2 years.

So, that UHD TV will cost me a grand total of $3384 over those 2 years. Not to mention being locked into a pricing contract for those 2 years too. For many people it works out to be more expensive, if you're already a Trustpower customer then you'll already be paying a premium on electricity regardless.

What I am more trying to say is check your power price and take this into consideration - you'll likely get a better deal elsewhere on power depending on your use. Many people fall into the trap of "ohhhh free TV" but they're paying for it through their power - moreso if they're a high user. The provider still needs to make their costs back of you signing up and a profit on top of this.

Yep, I seem to be one of the few that using Trustpower are actually a good deal for power and gas. I use the consumer comparison website every time a contract is up for renewal and they are consistently top three. This time they are $49/year more expensive than the cheapest option so over 24 months I will burn $98 if I take the TV deal for example.

I compare that to friends of mine and Trustpower is $200-$400 more expensive per year than other competitors so I can see that it is definitely situational.

Also with Trustpower, you need to factor in the TECT cheque if you live in Tauranga. Which means, if you are a low user. it can be worth paying more for your power so you qualify for that yearly cheque.

Was definitely the best setup for us last year when we were low power users. It's starting to look like we should move up to a standard plan now however, so also looking around at other options. Possibly for gas as well. Too many companies want to lock you in for 2 or 3 year contracts though.

Also looking at going back to 2degrees or Slingshot and bumping up to a gigabit plan.

Hmm, that Standard plan comment was due to what the Powerswitch site had recommended. Just did the maths and we would be worse off on the Standard plan charges, by 25% or so each week. It only would have been cheaper one week in the middle of winter.

I'm with Powershop for power....and have been for close to 10 years......I'm generally paid up several months in advance and buy all the specials as they have the biggest discounts.

At the other house I'm with Ecotricity. They cater for solar panels and battery storage and charging electric cars.

I'm with Spark for Internet. I was with Orcon for years.....but every time we had an outage the actual infrastructure fixes were with (then) Telecom.....so after a period of poor service, long outages and wasting time I didn't have I switched to Telecom....who became Spark. I'm currently on 200Mbps/200Mbps fibre and loving it. No real issues with functionality for a decade now. Their routers are rubbish, but I replace them with real ones......so maybe I'm making them look better than they would be otherwise.
