Every single time we generate a courier label for Pace or NZPost, they send us a paper invoice. Last week, got 15 paper invoices, individual envelopes, all arrived at the exact same time. That's probably 200 million of the letters alone...

Why don't you switch your account to electronic invoicing, then you won't get any letters at all? I haven't received anything from NZ Post on paper for well over 5 years.

How did you do it? I can't see an option in Pace or eShip, and emailing them asking them to stop sending letters was just ignored. We even started putting return to sender and putting them back in the post box, but they still send new ones.

My Brother-n-law, who has terminal lung cancer and is winding up his affairs, has 5 40Ltr plastic storage boxes just full of stamp albums collected over 60 years. Recently had them valued by the Waikato philatelist rep NZ. ZERO value now even though he has spent thousands on them and he does have some rare ones,

The Waikato philatelist rep for which company?

I am interested as well given I am about to undertake the same project for my Dad who is 93 and no longer able to keep up the hobby.

I am keen to find reputable people/parties to approach in Auckland so as to get an idea of value.

Inconsistencies with what gets emailed vs snail mail bemuses me.

Take the ASB: for years normal bank statements are avaialble on line (not even sure today if there is an option to receive in the mail), yet notification of making a term deposit or said term deposit maturing are all done with snail mail - with no option to have electronically or on-line only.

I remember years ago when Barbara Chapman was CEO, I actually sent a communication direct to her and got some standard PR waffle from staff and yet years later they are still being mailed with no other options.

If they can do a bank statement electronically, why can they not do term deposit notices.

All our ASB term deposit renewal notices and correspondence has been via email for the last 8 years or so.
The last was just last week. No letters involved.
I don't recall doing anything special to initiate the action.

I am with BNZ and all correspondence gets sent to me via email with the exception of changes to my variable rate mortgage which is always notified by conventional mail. I wondered if maybe there is some compliance reason why they have to do this.

The irony is that my variable rate mortgage is always fully offset so I don't even care what the interest rate is!

Rikkitic: On the very last day the very last letter is accepted for delivery, I will use my very last Kiwistamp to cover the postage of $150 to send myself a postcard!

It'll probably get 'lost in the mail.'

Says there are still 220 million things mailed each year. TBH that seems really high. What is all this stuff that people are posting? Surely not that many replacement credit cards and stuff going around the place?

Parking/Speeding Fines, court and Jury summons, Electoral registration, voting papers,  car registration...

There is still a bunch of offiicaldom that is still paper based...

Yep - government still uses mail as delivery of last resort. Businesses avoid it and the public hardly use it at all. At $1.40 vs $0.00 for email it is very, very expensive. I am not surprised one bit at the demise of postal mail. It is inevitably going the same way as the horse and cart.

Me too. However the interest rate does affect me as every time the rate goes up, my monthly payment goes up. This is despite it being fully offset - the bank doesn't consider the offset in determining the monthly payment and treats the mortgage as not offset for the purpose of monthly payment. The end result is that the mortgage is getting paid off faster as the whole payment goes against principal and none to interest.

With ANZ and also everything electronic except Term Deposit stuff. No online way to change that. Must email them and ask how to switch.

CCCFA have made the banks ultra conservative in ensuring that they meet their disclosure and increasing costs of lending obligations.

No bank wants to fall foul of this and risk the fines/not being able to enforce the loans could come with non-compliance.

Recently had them valued by the Waikato philatelist rep NZ. ZERO value now even though he has spent thousands on them and he does have some rare ones, particularly the ones for the mail sea planes who delivered to the small Micronesia and Polynesia islands in the days of flying boats and from the African coastal countries of the 50's & 60's which he collected as a cargo/passenger ship seaman doing that route.

However. These are going to his son who is in his 50's and they will be handed down from there and the rep said that then they will start to be worth money. So we are looking at around 75 to 100 years before this huge collection will have a return value.

Very sad really.

Unfortunately anything only has value if someone is prepared to pay for it. Especially things without inherent value.

Apologies for the tardiest in my reply.

It was not a company. It was: The New Zealand Stamp Dealers Association Inc.

And he took them to a; Dr Alan Craig in Hamilton, whose details you can find on the 'Membership' page.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Never really thought about it but just realised that BNZ is the same re TDs. Bit odd really. Maybe electronic is not an option there - I believe I have electronic elected for all communications but doesn’t work for TDs.

The instructions are on the bottom of every monthly NZ Post statement. It says:

"If you would prefer to receive your invoice/credit notes and statements as a PDF via email then please email us your details, including your Customer Number and preferred email address, to accounts@nzpost.co.nz"

I simply emailed them my details (this was in February 2017) and they switched everything over to email. I can also log into my NZ Post account and download invoices and statements on demand (which you should also be able to do even if you get paper invoices as well).

Pretty good example of why dropping letter services are a bad idea.

Received my dog rego update due 31st July (or the fee increases) from the CCC today, 10 days from date on letter (10 July), giving me 11 days notice to pay $60.

10 days for a letter to travel about 16km within Christchurch (if sent on same day as printing) seems excessive?
