With Ping, what happens if the buyer wants to dispute the payment... can they easily do this ?

Depends what you mean, Ping/Afterpay payments offer "buyer protection" which is like TM insurance within the first 30 days of an auction ending so if you buy something that breaks/does not arrive and the seller refuses refund/resolution when they should TM will step in and refund the buyer to a certain amount even if they can't recover funds from the seller. The seller in that case may get a negative credit on their account if TM feels its justified. TM will also cover stuff like return shipping fees in some cases.

TM/payment processor can/do dispute buyers chargebacks and typically win. Keep in mind before you can pay successfully by Ping/Afterpay TM do KYC and get proof of your ID/Credit card etc to confirm the person is making a payment with a card they were entitled to use when they added it to their profile. Pretty hard to argue it wasn't you when it's your IP address and TM profile making the purchase(where you must enter the TM password again to complete it) etc.

For me personally Ping and Afterpay increased my sales significantly and made things far easier as you get a buyers address right away once payment clears. I just pass on the 2-5% fee to buyers.

Geektastic: I was looking at a couple of things and realised I couldn’t log in to put them on my watchlist.

I contacted TM and they told me that because I was overseas their system had locked me out of my account.

Good job my bank doesn’t do that…!!

“I'm sorry but you can only use Trade Me if you are in NZ or AU, you won't be able to while overseas.”

Apparently I can’t even access my account (for example to collect money from Ping etc or place items on my watchlist) from outside the country.

Ridiculous and devoid of any logic.

I understand - vaguely - why you can’t trade from overseas but to not even be able to administrate your account etc whilst travelling seems bizarre. What do people who trade on it for their living do for income when away?

That's bizarre as there are overseas traders, I've seen listings from USA and UK eg https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/music-instruments/vinyl/lps-33-rpm/rock/listing/4414917144

No doubt they have to jump through many hoops.

I worked for a company overseas that was also not keen on MFA until it got some media attention.

It mostly came down to cost, be it on more user assistance when people get locked out, or a large twilio bill.

There was also the worry that people would leave the service once they got locked out of MFA and couldn't get back in easily.

TradeMe will have their own reasons for not implementing MFA, it being "best for the customer" is probably not the real one though.

Given that the vast majority of their customers probably already have to use it for banking and so on, I’d guess not!

“You're connecting from a suspicious location.

If you're using a VPN or anonymisation service, please disable it and try connecting to Trade Me again.”

Can’t even do that!

Was funny when they posted on facebook about password security and the comments were full of people asking why they don't do any form of 2 factor.

They will probably end up halfassing it and just think that a SMS code to a single number that you have on your trademe account is enough and expect to get accolades for implementing something that was decided to be a bad idea 10 years ago.

Thanks for sharing. Just enabled this on my account. Nice to see them offering MFA now.

I must be blind. I can't find "Update my details" from the My TradeMe page as per the instructions.

Yes found it in the end thanks. Couldn't get it to work with my MS Authenticator. I put in the code and then select Ms Authenticator then nothing happens.

Trademe has far more business, where as Facebook at least is sole traders for the most part.

Just got a tuscon off Facebook and no issues just done due diligence with arranging mechanical check etc.

That's an interesting euphemism for "scammers and timewasters".
