Handsomedan:

Senior Managers without a good EQ

As a people leader you need empathy, understanding and the ability to se another person's perspective.

I have a people leader in my organisation who has no EQ, which makes it hard to have a relatable conversation - it also makes it hard to discuss things like mental health, general well-being, workload and work/life balance.

The answer is often, "Yes, I work long hours and I just get on with it", or "I have been in meetings since 5am"...as opposed to a more reasonable response such as, "Do you need to take some time off?", "Is there anything I can do to help ease your workload?", would myou prefer I don't schedule meetings for 10pm?".

That is where  effective EAP policies and people are important to the wellbeing of a workplace.

And not something like "Here is a link to our Intranet where you can download a voucher for a massage session and a PDF on wellbeing." without talking about work-life balance, paying better salary, managing workload more effectively through better teams, etc, etc...

And then you remember that you work in the public sector, where none of the above are available and having a union is against the law... 😀

GitHub and/or Skinny. I try to log in to GitHub and get told to enter the code from the SMS they just sent me. Except there was no SMS.

It finally arrived about an hour later, and the site rejected it.

Bought some canned air from PBTech. I now have a supply of canned air. Every PBTech message I get advertising their latest sale, which are quite frequent, recommends (just for me), 4 different variations on....canned air 😀

TV One just now giving endless time to some restaurant lady whinging on and on and on about the short notice of the Covid level change. Would she have been happier with an unnecessary 24 hour delay? Some people just can't be pleased no matter what.

That people who don’t live in Auckland are tone deaf to the affect yo-yoing into and out of levels has. Particularly for businesses whose preparation is more than just unlocking the front door.

I admit, due to work commitments I didn’t have to endure the announcement and I didn’t see the evening news for its extensive coverage of not much.

Which would you rather deal with?  The occasional level change *as needed* or the effects of ignoring the pandemic as ably demonstrated by the US and UK?

If a business hasn't by now figured out and put in place measures to deal with each of the levels then that's on them for being unprepared.  We are likely to continue to have level changes in various places as we get the odd unknown source community case.

Sort your business continuity plan out because if you can't plan for something that is basically a known thing (when, not if), you're gonna be screwed if you get hit by an unknown thing.

That people who do live in Auckland are tone deaf to the feelings of irritation taxpayers outside Auckland get every time yet another swanky new road, Rail system, stadium, event etc is announced for Auckland as they bump along badly designed roads much in need of re-alignment and modernisation because there are no trains at all. Etc. 😊

@geoffwnz Please read the title of the thread. I made no comment on the current pandemic strategy. There is separate thread for that.

@Geektastic Having lived in other parts of the country I empathise with your “small thing that annoys you”. But if infrastructure was based on tax take then the South Island would have back country roads paved with gold due to wool prices last century (and no maintenance since). Likewise the Waikato and Taranaki regions would have super highways being built presently on the back of dairy.

Would you prefer staying in L3 or L2 until it's certain that it won't be coming back?

But it was pretty obvious that L1 was going to happen in Auckland... a savvy business person would take the risk and get things underway in anticipation.

Read the first part of my post above yours. Which part of not commenting on the strategy is hard to understand?

The only problem with anticipating what the government will do is there is still a chance you'll be wrong and it could cost a LOT of money at a time when hospitality is already hurting (I'm talking restaurants etc - I don't are about tourism to be honest, they've been ripping locals off for years)

When Level 4 hit and when all the later lockdowns came in Auckland I was doing work for a guy who owns about four bars/pubs in the Auckland area. He would bring literally car, van, ute fulls of salad prep stuff and anything else he had JUST had delivered prior to lockdown, I can't see him immediately going out to order all of that again on a whim that we MIGHT be going back to level 1 when we haven't gone down levels before when people had expected (because we weren't being told of all the things being considered that could change and extend a lockdown - not a bite at anyone, it's just a fact) making it impossible to be 100% sure

All those ingredients went to waste he told me after - simply unsalvageable given they were fresh produce and wouldn't taste fresh a week or even half a week later - lots of money hemorrhaging.

At the end of the job he was pleading for us to extend payment deadlines (which we were in a position to do) because he had sunk so much more money into trying to keep everything going, pay all staff (more than the 80% required because he has a conscience and knows they can't live on that)

I don't think suppliers would have been able to fulfill so many orders on standby for every business so it would have been luck of the draw
