I'm with you up to here. But I suggest that propaganda is not the ultimate dumbing-down of information. It is willfully mixing falsehoods with facts to persuade mislead.

Dumbing-down is normal and acceptable as part of education. ("All education is lies".) Sometimes you have to simplify, to provide a foundation and context for the detail. Dumbed-down understanding is understanding the big picture, without the nuances and fine detail.

The violent mob that attacked the American capitol and murdered five people did so because they believed the very dumb claim that the election was being stolen. They were able to believe this because (thanks in part to Fox) they were so ignorant of every piece of information that might have called it into question.

Yes to your first sentence. But I think they were able to believe because they *wanted* to believe. They deliberately turned away from every factual source to sustain a narrative that they wanted... Trump as President because, they, the heroes of the 21st century American Revolution, had made it happen. Not unlike the Nazis in the 1930s, who saw themselves as heroes saving the German Volk from themselves (and the Jews), and thus needed to overthrow the democratic institutions.

[quoted]

Dumbing down is not the answer. Educating up is.

[/quoted]

Yes to that. But you've got to have the foundation on which to build.

I don't completely disagree with the points you make. Yes, simplification has a legitimate place, but I think there is a fine line between that and dumbing down. The problem where propaganda is concerned is that dumbed-down information removes the ability to place propaganda in context, and see what is false and distorted.

Propaganda is really only effective if it's not recognised as propaganda by the audience.
It's happening even when the audience couldn't be considered "dumb".

Look at "trickle down" economics, generally accepted as having solid foundations for about 30 years.  Many of the "academic studies" most cited by "respectable" media and used by political lobbyists were produced by privately funded "think tanks" used as propaganda tools by a few wealthy people and quasi-religious libertarian zealots - who knew exactly what they were doing and what their desired end game was.

Something small that annoys me is a light-hearted thread getting dragged off topic by quasi-intellectual discussions of a political nature where, of course, the opinions are always one-sided and correct.

I think George is confused between average and median.

Either that or he's making a simplification to appeal to dumb people.

George isn’t confused, and it’s really disconcerting how low the average person’s stupidity is.

I'd rather the few didn't understand, than accept a dumbing down of everything that eventual makes us all dumber.

Or better still encourage people to want to learn and think for themselves, instead of saying "everything has to be understood by everyone" with not effort on their part.

it will only make you dumber if you let it. that is on you. no one else.

Okay folks, I think we can all agree that the discussion on dumbing down in messaging etc has polluted this thread enough. Feel free to create a new thread if you wish.

Cheers and thanks.

’low stupidity’? that’s a subjective assessment - sometimes I think it’s better to be stupid, and sometimes, not so much.

Good use of punctuation is, in my opinion, essential, though.

The flavour of my quick on the trot Shin Cup has changed. For the worse.

What was a real spicy noodle snack is now an insipid imitation.

And the quantity and quality of the miniscule amount of shitake shrooms and spring onions has diminished , and the quantity of noodles has shrunk.

However the ingredient list is still the same.

They did disappear from the supermarket shelves for a month or so, so they probably got rid of all the good stock and replaced it with this inferior version.

Not happy as I now have to vet yet another set of noodle cups.

Posted April 1

When you Ask for Better, and Chorus tell you it will be better by March 2021, but now it's April 2021 and there are still no signs of it getting better.

"Available April 2021" changed to "Available May 2021" at the end of April. This week, it has changed to "Coming Soon".  Come on @chorus, you're killing me here!

So close, and yet still so far...

People on these forums who ask for advice on something, and then when you offer well-thought-out advice, don't even acknowledge that you've done so.

We all make flippant/contentious remarks at times, it adds to the debate and I'm happy enough for those to be blankly ignored.  But surely ignoring genuine answers is slightly rude?

We bought a brand-new house six years ago. It has a Grohe mixer tap in the kitchen with a pull-down spray nozzle on a flexible metal hose.

Just as a general response, unfortunately not of any use to the OP: Don't ever get one of these things, they're cursed, no matter whether you pay $50 or $500 it's going to fail eventually, either it'll start leaking from one of a dozen different possible locations conveniently present in the design or something will break. No matter how handy it may seem at the time, it's not worth the hassle.
