you know those prepaid bubble wrapped courier bags that sell for like $6, just a bit bigger than A4. That is how my laptop turned up stuffed in with the charger, no additional packaging wtf?

johnr:
freitasm: Just got an email today:

I want to ask a question on your site but wouldnt have a clue how too. My question is...Is there anyway to unlock an iPhone 4s that has had the IMEI number blocked by the carrier (telecom). I purchased it from trademe only to find out when I went to buy a micro sim for it that the freaking thing was blocked, telecom have told me that the previous owner had it on a contract and that if I was to pay the bill of $479 that they could unblock it not taking into account that I have just paid $925 for the phone. Please help me
?

Hmmm. Sorry sir, you have been scammed.
?

And it will be black listed on Vodafone as well

John

But not on 2degrees :D

Handle9:
alasta:

This is a very interesting scenario. I would think that technically the telco would have no claim to the handset on the basis that it would not act as security on any debt, with the unpaid contract break fee being an unsecured debt.

It doesn't seem that they are making a claim on the handset, they're just declining service to that device. It's semantic but a bit different than registering a property security.

A little short sighted by the telco, they presumably can still chase their original debtor for the debt, plus be earning income from a potential new customer

Although, is it essentially selling "stolen goods" given that they havent being paid for (ok, stolen is not the right term, but there is the potential for fraud I guess)

Does the seller have a few of these or a history of selling phones?

I will admit, if I were Telecom I'd be asking the new owner of the phone to give me the old owner's contact details, and I'd remove the block off the phone.  After all, I now know that the old owner has some cash to pay me with!

Jaxson: Oh yeah, and the guy that bought something and I freighted it away. (Personally that's the end of it for me and I provide the tracking number, IF they request that type of shipping. If it gets lost etc, that's your problem to chase up as you bought something you couldn't pick up in person...)

Get an email later saying it didn't turn up and he's very annoyed etc. I looked online with the tracking number and it says it was delivered. Turns out though he's not even in the country, so how he determined it wasn't delivered it I don't know. Long story but when he's back in NZ he finds the docket and goes and collects from the depot/asks for a redeliver and it's all sweet.

Sitting in Red Face trademe feedback land during all of this until he finally finds it. Personally I don't agree that the buyer should be the only one that can comment...

Actually if it gets lost as the sender you are responsible for making any claims atleast that's what I've been told by most courier companies

if it was delivered but noone was home then it's the buyers problem if there's an ctd in the mail box

Athlonite: I recently bought a second hand modem/router on trademe for $10 + pnp I payed the $10+pnp the modem arrived all good I thought then got a redface negative feed back because his bank charged him $3 for the transaction he even emailed me to ask for the extra $3

I told Him tough snot not my fault your ASB bank charges you for transactions should added in the cost of that to the original auction price

I don't get it. Why would the bank charge him for a deposit made online?

It was a manual payment made at an Napier ASB bank branch but that doesn't mean I should be the one to cover what his bank charges him

No I shouldn't I advised him that this was to be the method of payment before making payment so it was upto him after that I made the payment that was required of me $10+pnp anything else is not my problem

I also don't chase buyers for bank fees I see that as my problem not theirs

You know, you're in the wrong here.  Everyone knows that all banks charge for over the counter transactions, and the fact that you are shopping on Trademe shows you clearly have internet access.  You deserve that red flag, and I'd give you one too in that circumstance.

I disagree.

May I ask why you did a manual over the counter deposit? Maybe so that the funds could clear straight away in the sellers account? And you could have your item shipped sooner? Thats the only reason why I think somebody would want to do this.

A manual deposit fee is normally charged to the account owner. But as you are the one inside the bank, you should be the one to pay for the privelege of seeing a real person in a bank, not the person selling the item as he/she probably could not care less.

The very least is to pay the extra fee. Its the right thing for you as the buyer to do.

Interesting.. I always cringe when i get charged $3 for an in branch deposit and it's occurred to me now, that i often advise the sellers that i will make a branch deposit so the seller can see the cleared funds immediately. Then they can ship the same day. I would have to say I've completed maybe 30 trades this way..

Never thought of the fee the seller is charged. Seems right to reimburse them for this. I've never been asked, but if I was, then no problem adding the bank fee.

when a friend and I were selling cheap junk on there we had a second savings account that had unlimited deposits and advised people to use that for over the counter deposits but still many would put the 000 suffix and we would get pinged.

Easier to just tell the bank to only accept deposits from the accountholder and they seem to manage to do that and turn people away.

blakamin: I had a "parts wanted" ad.
Guy rang me up, I paid, never recieved the item.... he went to jail over xmas.
He scammed me and 15 other people to the tune of $8k
He was 17..

Was on Stuff.co.nz when he got sentenced to a year inside

edit. TM sent me an email warning me that someone had looked at my ad that was a scammer.
I emailed and told them, yeah, I know, he scammed me and I reported it to you... Only then did I get a reply.

The New Plymouth police were good tho.

Hahahaha... That is a damn good effort... Little buggar, but a good effort!

I did the over the counter deposit because I was in town and near his bank as I said in previous post I did advise him that I would be doing that and had nothing back from him until 3 days after the item was received

either advise people of the surcharge in the auction or in the initial email sent with account name/number but don't just put bank deposit in the payment method and expect me to pay your fees for you it's your account not mine...
