We are moving house shortly and have a lot of books we do not wish to take with us - paperbacks, hardbacks, coffee-table books, fiction and non-fiction. Includes complete set of leather-bound 9th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica (about 2 metres of shelf space).

Any ideas what we could do with them apart from dumping them? Happy to donate them anywhere they might be wanted. Anyone who wants them is welcome.

not sure where you are but most public libraries have organisations that run book fairs to raise money for them, maybe try your library.

I cleaned out a couple of hundred books over the Christmas period - I was just getting too many to fit my shelves/house.

The ratty dog-eared ones went in a Skip. The ones that were in reasonable condition went to a charity shop. I like books, and like to think of a book that I have read and loved winding up in the hands of someone else who will get enjoyment, and if a charity makes a few dollars along the way that's even better.

Some reference books are timeless - I have 20 year old copies of mechanical designs, mathematics theory and equations, Z80 programming, etc. Lot of that stuff can date, but nevertheless, forever useful in the right hands.

Googling isnt the same has having a massive tome, heavily indexed, and the smell and feel of musty old pages. And bits of long forgotten sammies stuck in the pages.

Really it depends on the books, as some are quite valuable. Especially hardback non fiction ones in mint condition, where they are still as popular today as ever. Maybe put them on trademe in lots. I went to an auction recently and it had books in lots of approx 50 books. They had some interesting books, but you would only want to buy one, where to purchase it, you need to purchase the entire lot.
