Sis thinks its a poppy, so I google, and there are poppys all shapes and sizes and colours.

This one was a weed, but no, a flower. It died, then another (this one) popped up a few feet further. Very nice

Mrs MDF has declared quite confidently that it's a poppy.

Can Mrs MDF advise how I harvest seeds? There is a dead one two feet away so I guess this one was windblown. And I assume an annual? If so, I am very keen to harvest the seeds and sow at our new place. "What you sow you shall reap"  !

Apparently this bit is a fertilised seed head and has the seeds (not the flowery bit):

Ideally you want to wait for this to brown off a bit. It will then be a convenient wee container to take to your new place. If it splits you need to collect the seeds in something like an empty matchbox.

Heh heh.. opium poppies.

They have a habit of disappearing if they're in public view.

Heh - as soon as I saw your pic I thought exactly what Fred99 says above. If they're at the back of your property and well out of view you may be alright, but bear in mind people talk and you may get some unwanted visitors one night a little bit before the next lot of flowers are due to open up. Papaver Somniferum - it's legal to cultivate these plants here.

Thanks, its pretty conclusive, that capsule is identical to the website you gave the link too.
