Bought a new Miele Cat & Dog Vacuum to replace our 10 year old Dyson in January.

Performance is brilliant and given how flimsy the new Dysons we looked at felt, I was fairly pleased with the purchase and felt vindicated in going back to a bag-based system.

That said, the spring on the telescopic wand gave out last week and started to retract under the slightest pressure.

I called Miele Monday, emailed their spares team on Tuesday as requested and a new replacement arrived on my doorstep the very next day - pretty impressed really!

Hopefully this small issue is not indicative of the overall quality of the vacuum and that will be the end of it.

So - Miele, you have my vote for now!

Anyone else want to weigh in on the important topic of vacuum cleaners?

The Hetty / Henry vacuums are fantastic. Manual winder, which is great as the auto ones always fail. Industrial strength. Bags are huge and last ages. Expensive, but perhaps the last vacuum cleaner you'll ever buy.

We purchased a Vax wet/dry unit many years ago (the big orange looking things), hasn't missed a beat except the "turbo" head that came with it fell apart after a year or so, not that it bothered us.

Its sucked up all sorts of rubbish (with kids and dogs, you can guess the sort of stuff), and keeps on going :)

Dyson by far are the best, we have two the oldest close to 10 years old, never needed anything done to it and its suction power is still like it was new. They are so easy to use and empty I can use them in my chair.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Another vote for Miele vacuum cleaners from me. Well made, extremely good suction, easy to use/store, and very good value.

Our old one was great - 10 years excellent service, but the suction doesn't seem to hold a candle to the new Miele now and the new ones we looked at seemed both flimsy and fiddly to empty...barrel was a lot smaller than our old one too.

I brought a Dyson a few years ago and it did not last well. When it was new it was powerful enough you could lift the carpet off the floor with it, but within 6 months the flimsy plastic to hold the wand on had snapped off, and sucked less than a 5 year old noname $99 jobby. Wouldn't buy again.

I think drag arounds are more prone to damage and to damage furniture. We gave them up a few years back because of that. Just prefer uprights, although robot ones are becoming more enticing.

We bought a Dyson DC54 Animal to replace an older Miele Cat & Dog, it is by far the worst vacuum we have ever owned and will be replacing it with a newer Miele in due course.

I think Dyson spent far too much time on researching a sucking system than making a functional vacuum cleaner for every day use. With 3 Birmans hair is constantly getting clogged within the telescopic arm, the turbo head can't suck up anything of substance otherwise it jams in the tiny little hole. The turbo head flicks things rather than sucking them, e.g. cat food and/or the little bits of kitty litter that the cats track through.

Emptying is tedious and required often but expected for a bag-less, it's dusty as no matter how hard I try keep it contained within the large plastic bag I'm emptying in to etc

Yep, our really, really old and much respected Dyson died last year and the new ones in comparison looked flimsy, finicky and clunky. Ended up with a bagless Bosch, very happy with it.

The new models have a cheaper wand. I've got one of the older ones which has a 3 part telescopic wand. But they changed this to a two part wand to bring the price down as well as remove some attachments. Mine also has a small turbo brush for stairs which the newer models didn't have.
