I'm looking to buy some 3D clip ons for my corrective glasses. I'm sick of mucking around trying to wear cinema provided glasses over my glasses, and the general poor state of cinema glasses in cinemas where you borrow glasses.

I thought it would be simple thing ... the clip ons I have found have exclusions for various 3D formats e.g. "won't work with Dolby 3D"

Is there a standard format that is used in cinemas in NZ?

I think the majority of NZ cinemas (Event and Hoyts anyway) use RealD 3D. These use the cheap $1 'disposable' glasses, so you should be able to find cheap 'clip-on' style ones to use for these cinemas.

Reading Cinemas use Dolby 3D (which are harder to find in a 'clip-on' style) and IMAX have their own 3D system (not sure if you'll find a 'clip-on' for that).

So if you stick with Event Cinemas or Hoyts then the cheap RealD 3D 'clip-ons' should do you fine.

Back when LG was selling 3D PC monitors they always included a pair of clip-on "passive" 3D glasses in the box. It had a part number and was orderable.

Basically you want "passive" 3D glasses, but some makers thought they were being clever by rotating the polarity by 45 degrees......to work with THEIR monitors......so you see purple ghosting if you don't also rotate the RealD 3D lens when used with THEIR monitors. Easy to check. Just put them on and tip your head. Ghosting or no ghosting?
