That's a relief, I thought Amazon was burning down. I'd just put in a order for some clothes and shoes from them.

this has been problem for years from farmers clearing the forest by burning it to make room for soya bean crops so they could make a living and people blame beef and dairy farmers for climate change .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Well I did see a thing of Slashdot that the 2nd prize winner for an innovation competition was to use big refrigerated submarines to create ice blocks to cool the arctic.

I jokingly said perhaps 1st prize was to burn all the Forrests so the smoke would reflect the sunlight back into space.

Looks like they took me seriously.

If this is not the perfect example of why this planet is screwed I don't know what is.

It will look just like the latest Blade Runner movie in, you've guessed it, 2049.

Umm, it's not the either/or issue your post suggests... Sure, rain forest destruction has long been and remains a contributory factor in climate change, but equally it's totally fair enough to hold beef and dairy farming to account for its contribution, and we certainly could and should be moving towards more efficient use of productive land.

Further, it may well have 'been (a) problem for years', but that ignores the evidence that  things have demonstrably got worse with the election of Bolsonaro - assume you're aware of all this, eg https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/04/deforestation-of-brazilian-amazon-surges-to-record-high-bolsonaro

The rise to power of Bolsonaro is further evidence that the world is going to hell in a hand basket, and he's doing a good job of providing the necessary heat for this transition.

At least three quarters of global soya production goes to livestock feed (80% of the Amazon's soya), and goes hand-in-hand with clearing forest for ranching, e.g. https://globalforestatlas.yale.edu/amazon/land-use/cattle-ranching

Quite a lot of it ends up in the bread on our shelves (not necessarily from the Amazon - just soya) and I have no idea why. No bread recipe I own includes soya amongst the ingredients.

don't know, but i would have thought tropical rainforests are too wet to spontaneously combust. the rain part of rainforests describe the climate incorrectly - thunderstorm is a better world. every other day.

There are wet and dry seasons.

As I understand it, there are also delicate balances, the "wet" a self-supporting cycle where much of the moisture comes from the forest (ie as opposed to humid air from the sea). I believe that the Amazon is also expected to get warmer and drier with climate change.  That's probably not good.

But don't worry.  Denialists either think it's not going to happen, or if it does it's not going to be bad, or if it is bad, then human ingenuity will find a solution, or if we can't, they can emigrate to Mars.

At least this one didn't escape to Mars:

Billionaire industrialist David Koch, who spent vast sums of his billions in personal fortune promoting climate denialism and other right wing causes over the last four decades, died Friday at 79.
