Bought a $199 Lenovo tablet back in May 2019 at Harvey Norman.
Paid an extra $35 for 2 years extra warranty.
The tablet died last week and I went in to Harvey Norman and got a new one.
However, I had to pay for the extra warranty again (on a side note, they wanted to charge me $85 this time for extra 2 year warranty). In the end they changed it to $40, as I found it unreasonable.
Anyway, my question is: Should I need to pay for a new addition warranty again?
Should the original additional warranty not still be active, as the device only is 18 months old (and I still have 18 months left)?

It's all in the terms & conditions of the extra warranty. It terminates as soon as they pay out or replace the original product. Apart from some clauses it's a one shot deal.

Thats definitely a cash cow for that retail chain. As said previously the CGA should cover you.

I was told by one of their employees to get the extra warranty.
Then when it was close to run out, I could bring in the tablet and ask for a new one, as the battery by then wouldn’t be up to a good standard. They would then need to replace it.
Sounded a bit strange, but I thought it was worth a shot...

They are always desperate to upsell that extra warranty.  I always decline and put the same amount of money in my rainy day fund.  I'm guessing a couple of thousand has gone in there so far.

I've never had an appliance fail within the first 5 years, except my iPod and I jail broke that so...

I always suggest people buy "Manufacturers Warranties" not "Store Warranties" for HP Products this means an HP Care Pack I am sure that there will be a similar thing for other brands

Any Balance of the carepack is transferred on replacement

CGA will cover you but I just hate fights trying to argue it

Youve been scammed . Twice
The warranty extension you paid for will still be valid , from the time when you purchased it
scammed with the warranty you bought, scammed when told to buy another warranty .

These warranties are money earners for them, and staff often forced to sell them.
The staff you are dealing with will be doing their best, you need to escalate this to the manager .
mention CGA & their attitudes should change .

I know of one case where the extended warranty also turned out to be worthless , the Aus company covering the extended warranty wouldnt honor it .

I'd also bet they dont cover normal wear & tear, ie batts losing capacity over time.

Yeah they tell you BS like that because they make commission on the sale of extended warranty.

I would be taking this up with the retailers head office. They are at least once, in breach of the fair trading act I think. I would be utterly gomsmacked if anywhere in the contract for that extended contract would it state you could get a new one after x period just "cause it's old". It will cover faults or manufacturing defects.

When I bought my smart watch, HN's salesperson told me the CGA didn't cover battery failure, but the extended warranty did.

I didn't buy it and three years later the battery is still good.

My view is that there wouldn't be such enthusiasm for selling these warranty extensions if they weren't outrageously profitable.  And if they are really profitable, that means most people aren't making claims.

I'd be asking to get that in writing.

Yup. When someone is trying to sell you something, it is because *they* are going to make money out of it. The harder they try, the more they are hoping to make. And therefore the worse the deal for you.

I bought one for a Nutribullet because I know they're easy to kill. $10 for cover from Noel Leeming. Sure enough, a couple of months pass and the blender starts pissing smoke. I took it back to and got a refund for both the unit and the warranty. I then bought another one + warranty that wound up even cheaper than the last.

A couple of months should be well within the original warranty, let alone the CGA.
