I actually think I patronised all of these places at different points of my life!

What are some you remember? A couple I can think of is DEKA (not mentioned in the article; from memory Farmers bought them out) and RTS who I think became Bond and Bond - now also gone.

Woolworths Dept stores (preceded LD Nathan, which preceded DEKA)

DIC department stores (which as little kid I told myself stood for Dogs in Charge)

Warnocks - a bit like Hallensteins at the time.

Dalgety's - a bit like Farmlands IIRC

I can remember as a little kid, Friday night shopping with my family.  As a treat at the end of the night we'd go to a takeaway stand and get deep fried wontons.  They seemed amazingly exotic, lol. Simple times.

L V Martin. Purchased by Smith City and the rest is history. Not really a chain as such Quay Computers, I shopped there too many times.

I can't remember the business name, but there was a franchise in malls that sold nature-oriented stuff.  Toys, games, curiosities etc. Briefly operated in the 1990s/2000s.

Time travel in Huntly.
Deka, gone but, ghostly remains?
I gather there was some thought to renovate it as a historical monument ?
Is it still there?

At least Liquor Stores are a good long term bet.

From what I remember of the Takapuna store they didn't post prices on any of the items sold so you had to go up to the counter to ask, and their "service" was... well, condescending would be one way of describing it. The minute Dick Smith arrived in NZ to provide an alternative they could pretty much close up shop.

Homestead Fried Chicken with their amazing roast potatoes. I asked the question in the comments section for the above Stuff article as to whether they were just Wellington and did they get bought out, or just went out of business. Most people seemed to think they were just Wellington region. Anyone remember them anywhere else? Apparently they wen into receivership in 1989.
