This set is for tourists only and is not designed for use in Japan. This set is not to be used in Japan.

The above is printed on the back of the box for a Sony MP3 Walkman which my stepdaughter received for her birthday.  As no power supply is present to charge with, only a USB cable. e.g. voltage differences etc.  I am wondering why this text is printed on the box.  Googling has failed to turn up an answer. Does anyone know why that text is there?

It will likely mean that it has not been built to comply with regulations in Japan, ( It may very well comply, but will not have been tested or certified for "domestic" use)

You also find the reverse, when you buy thing in Japan, I have found the entire manual in Japanese ( as you would expect), but buried on a back page near the specification will be a one line sentence in English, FOR USE ONLY IN JAPAN.

Again I suspect it means that the product has not been submitted to certifiers in any country other than Japan.

Its simply liability covering for the manufacturer,

Does it have FM radio? Japan uses different "steps" and most FM radios for their market won't work overseas.

Yep it  has FM radio and I  never considered that. Must be Monday.  They could word it better though. Like "The radio on this set is only for certain international markets" or something along those lines.

Ah that will explain why I couldn't get my Japanese market Pioneer car radio to autoscan stations - it just wouldn't find any. When i hunted a click at a time each station was there. (an online manual wasn't much help - my Japanese isn't up to much. But at least they had enough pictures and English text in there for me to figurwe out most functions.)
