Still a long way to go, if we level this effort with the projects in Singapore. Very impressive things being done there.

We had a visit from a company (Heulab) showing their software for electronic classroom, using Tablet PCs during one of the Tablet PC User Group meetings. Very interesting software. Of course no government officials were there during the user group meeting to take advantage of this experience. But hey, this is just a user group, right?

AFAIK, there's one school in Auckland using the software we saw during that meeting, for a project.

That's what they said when the first BRICK laptops came out at the private school I went to. They tried to force everyone to use laptops. looks like the samething is happening again.

Is the software ready?

The Heulab software is ready. I saw a demo and they have it in Singapore and other places.

You could join us in the Tablet PC User Group. Next meeting is this Thursday, 3 August, Microsoft NZ, Wellington, 6pm. Pizza and beer after... You can then talk to Craig Pringle, our very own local Microsoft MVP Tablet PC.

Sorry I must be critical, heulab doesn't seem to be cross-platform and many schools are hetero-OS environments! Software designed for use in Schools MUST be cross-platform if it is to be widely adopted.

I support a network at a Primary School with wireless coverage all-around and laptops the children can use. It's really great seeing the kids learning the Office suite at such a young age and some of them can make better looking documents than me!

I havn't seen many PC laptops physically durable enough for use in Schools. These iBooks have pens shut in the lids, get dropped off tables and who knows what else! And only one (out of 25) has ever shown a problem in two or more years.

sorry, i thought it would be on-topic to share my experience of working with computers in schools
I would welcome the tablets, but iBooks are doing a good job it already.
