Hey

In Short, I'm an amateur photographer, I'm wanting to start selling my work and my services. But I cant setup and email address, blogs etc until I have a name!

I'm just here for some advice, please let me know what you think of the names, and feel free to add your own suggestions.

Heres a few so far:

Capturevated
You shot me
Oh Snap
Ill shoot you

I'll shoot you is my favourite. I need something catchy, but it also has to be relevant/usable. Im not sure how someone planning a wedding would react if they saw that name! Thats what im trying to get advice on.

Im doing landscapes, events and portraits. At this stage anyway.

I quite like capturevated

I'll shoot you doesn't roll as nicely, and as a domain illshootyou looks a bit dodge.

i would recommend using words that will most likely be searched in google. they will appear much higher in a search than anything else.

eg i would search for "auckland photographer", "photographer", "photos" to "photography near auckland" etc.

anything complicated eg "Capturevated" will likely not be searched and missed spelled, so i would recommend against that.

so something like "Kenny M Photography" or "KM Photography", might not be the coolest name, but produce much better search results than "You shot me".

I like "Oh Snap!"
As for google searches I'm sure plenty on here can advise exactly, but I believe it's not so much the overall name, but how you set up the page?

Oh Snap! Photography
I'll shoot you like you've never been shot before.

Yeh as soon as I saw this title on the front page, I straight away thought of "Oh snap!"
Something like:
K M Photography, putting the 'Oh Snap!' back into your photos.

Thanks for the replys. Been very helpful, keep them coming.

As for that link. It makes sense to me. I was trying a avoid using my name, but if it comes to that.

However, perhaps something like 'Oh Snap!, Photography by Kenny M'. Blogs, business cards etc would say that. But email address and marketing might be just 'Oh snap!'

Still, im not sure, thats why im asking here : )
For example. A Wedding photo or family portrait with 'Oh Snap, photography by Kenny M' would be fine. But my landscape photos might not suit the same name?

As for google, Any blog etc would say im a Tauranga Based photographer. But Ive learned that google searches are better if you have constant new information. Says that going out and adding 5 new photos, then not getting any more worth adding for another month is WORSE then taking those photos, but adding them one at a time, once a week. IE, constantly updated.
...Thats a bit offtopic tho (tho google in general isnt)

To be honest I found those names juvenile. No offense but those names didn't instill any confidence of a professional outfit. My honest thoughts.

I have liked names that displayed, to those with camera knowledge, photography terms, eg aperture, shutter, mirror, iso etc. Anyone can take a photo, however what you want to say in a name is that you provide a service that anyone can do but at a quality that people will pay you.

Search engines are driven by meta tags so if you want someone to find you then you would have obvious tags that reflect your target audience.

Thanks for the honesty. This is the exact reason I'm actually doing research rather then just picking the one that 'I' liked.

My target would be families, weddings and events. So need a name that fits those people. As much as I enjoy taking photos of my mates and similar age group people, I find the pictures come out naturally with character (someones always doing something they shouldn't), I also have to factor in that these are the people least likely to actually pay me...

Some hopefully useful words that come to mind for me when thinking of photography businesses:

click, pose, angle, lighting, apeture, lens, focus

To my mind using your name in the company title gives it a formal slant, being too riske creates the impression you're immature/unprofessional....

I think using your own name is more professional as it is a personal service that requires a good personality, so they will come to know you by your name anyway. Mayhbe just call it your surname. You will find that many of the top companies use their own name, A very competitive market though, as digital SLRs have become so cheap. I know quite a few people who have setup photography buinsesses in the last few years and find it hard yacker. But good luck.

I might have to look at using my name. I still like the idea of having a 'buisness name' with it as well. But again, thats why im here. To find out whats going to work out best in the real world
