As usual, the best anyone can say for the internet here is 'be glad it's not worse' :P I'd remind people that it's two thousand and fifteen.

your soap box is not going to get you faster internet any quicker

there is nothing you can do short of forking out a tonne of money yourself to have your own fibre connection or moving somewhere that has better internet.

NZ is in the process of changing the format/way internet is delivered to people from copper to fibre, its not a quick and easy process, there will always be some people that get it before others

I feel your pain (as I think I can see others do as well) but as others have pointed out, it needs to be put into perspective.

As jase pointed out, not much that can be done, unsure what you expect this thread to achieve. The speed of internet is so important to me that I'd move house in your situation and that I wouldn't even consider buying a property that wasn't VDSL with Fibre coming within 1 year.

You DO have some options, but they aren't likely palatable from a cost perspective perhaps.

FYI a year ago I attended a tech conference and the keynote speaker did a survey by show of hands. There were 350 people in the room, mostly US techs. He asked for a show of hands "who has 1Mbps Internet" everyone had hands up, then it was 5mbps, only 1/2 of hands were up after that, then 10mbps, perhaps only 20-30 hands, above 20mbps there were only 5 of us in 350. Only I had my hand up @ above 50mbps. (He was after home connections).

I have 7mps down, am 5+ km away from the mt eden exchange in balmoral, no ADSL2/VDSL and no fibre until 2018.

what makes this extremely painful, is that they just, PUT FIBER IN MY STREET AND STOPPED ROLLOUT ONE BLOCK, 200M AWAY!!! $*^$&^&@^&@!!!!!!!

Looks like you need to make friends with a neighbor up a block with roof line-of-sight, then setup a 5ghz AC link with directional antennas :)

I'm amazed at that anecdote, I'll counter with my own: Every one of my friends' or my own place over there, in multiple cities, had 50mbit or more, most around the 150-250 mark, and usually limited by the speed of the WiFi router.

in-case you hadnt noticed we are not the USA, we do not have the money or the big cooperates that the US has.

once the fibre network is finished here the tides will turn we will have access to better/faster internet that the majority of those in the US, but hey its apples vs oranges

i just dont think you see it and you expect everything to be like it is in the states

you havent even asked a question in this thread

Heh, similar here with fiber - just had it laid along Whangaparaoa Road, except near us. 500m either direction from us has it. Thankfully VDSL is available so a 40/10 connection is keeping me happy :)

Be thankful that our UFB network is open access and you have the choice of 80 ISPs. Compare to Comcast, or Time Warner, or AT&T where they'll put a data cap on, or throttle your Youtube, or mine your web surfing habits and sell them to marketers.

Our broadband network will be one of the best in the world by the end of this decade, it's just some people have to wait a few more years.

no, we have the equivilent of at&t here.

If you had any actual experience dealing with AT&T I'd suggest you'd never make that comment. Having dealt with those big American telcos a fair bit, even our worst aren't as bad as their best.

newmarket is one of those special places where it sits neatly between two exchanges. on top of that they seem to have done partial cabinet rollout, without covering many people at all. for some reason the cabinet sides for vdsl at least look at me like they're a lot smaller than on average. and if you're not in one of those lucky locations you're screwed.

that said, 2018 availability is soon, lots of people are stuck on 2019!

personally i think this ufb thing is a waste of government money, and that it would have made more sense to roll it out even slower but double up the vdsl cabinets. that said if ufb was available to me i'd be tempted to get it, and what australia is doing does sound worse.

Considering the copper network was built up over the past 100 years, 10 years to get UFB to 75% of NZ houses is pretty good IMHO.

Not really. several of us have commented that your anedotal experience of the USA is not representative of the truth.

Some parts of the USA can get 200Mbps broadband. Some parts of NZ (about 40%) can get 200Mbps broadband.

Some parts of NZ can sadly only get ADSL 8Mbps or worse. Some parts of the USA (yes, including some areas of major cities) can only get those sorts of speeds too.
