Thanks richms, glad you know me so well to make an immediate judgement like that!
I would only refuse on the basis that if the next tenant does not want fibre, they're stuffed as the Chorus techs remove the copper wire from the conduit as far as I'm aware.
Landlord does NOT have to provide a phone service at all, it's not in the RTA or any agreement that I have ever seen, up to the tenant to organise phone/broadband/etc WITHOUT damaging the property, OR when the leave, they are to pay for it to be returned to the state it was in when they started their tenancy

Anyway, thread s not about my landlording decisions, it's about the lack of BB in almost 2013!


Back on topic, anyone know the average wait time for a port to be ready if they're adding more hardware?

This is incorrect. Copper is only removed if absolutely necessary - ie the aerial span involves the use of poles that don't permit additional cable drops, or when the copper is used as a draw wire and reestablishing the copper isn't possible.

Absolutly correct - copper (@ this stage of the UFB network installs) is not removed (unless there is no option to retain it and install a fibre connection -  in the future when fibre becomes the standard form of connection in NZ only then will be copper be routinely removed.

Maybe those green boxes outside are Telstra-Clear? And if its UFB then your landlord should think of it as an improvement to the property. If copper is ever removed then Chorus have to offer a phone-equivalent service over the fibre (I think its 128k) at reasonable prices, so yeah a landlord that tries to block you getting UFB installed would be pretty stink and likely become a target for Chorus' legal people. Problem landlords are a significant risk for the UFB project so all network owners would be ready to manage that.

Yes this can happen and it can be a 1-2 week delay until a new line card is added to the cabinet.

The port-waiter I remember that didn't get service within 6 months happened because a few houses in the street were allocated to another cabinet, scheduled for a year later.

However, if you are in a waiter queue for ADSL then don't cancel without any alternative, because theres no point going back to the end of the queue with a different ISP. I expect Chorus would have stopped putting new ADSL resources into areas that have UFB going live in the near future, which could be your area. If so, good luck with TelstraClear. Vodafone will probably be happy either way...




Time to find a new industry!
