In addition to limited access or a quick install turnaround the installer may not want to install in a wardrobe due to lack of ventilation?  Although it might be an unused cupboard now, once it has coats and other clothing in it it could pose a fire risk especially if a hanging coat or similar covers the vents of the ONT.

The copper connection argument annoys me.  We recently had fibre installed and they were good about where the ONT was installed which happened to be around the TV area.  One of the guys was confused as to why I suggested behind the TV when the phone jack was in the hallway.  Although we chose to retain our landline (for now) he was adamant it needed to be installed next to the jack point.  I knew our ISP configures VOIP on a POTS input on the ONT directly so totally negated the need for the jack point.

When the guy finished I found another unmarked and unpowered box screwed to the wall alongside the ONT that I hadn't seen or heard of anyone else having installed.  It was basically a new copper master junction box so the 'copper network' of the house could all connect to the ONT if required in the future.  Great... except they knew the house only had one jack point but he said they don't get paid if they don't install the box.

Hey thanks everybody for the advice and input. I have decided to cancel the fibre install for the time being. I could have it in the lounge but it would drive me mad. The wardrobe probly isn't the best place for it now I have been studying it... I'm going to try my hand at going installing a data cabinet and home network. Just don't know where to even put that now haha.

Cheers

My install is a 9RU frame/light cabinet (double outlet RCD and circuit breaker power and housing ONT (hanging on screws in gib in back of cabinet), 24 port patch panel (1 RU), router (1 RU), 24 port switch (1 RU), powerboard (1 RU), R Pi (Unifi controller + RADIUS server), UAP injectors) in a wardrobe. I renamed the wardrobe "comms room". The bedroom is a study/office. Little power generated by hardware - under 50W. Very tidy.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Haha damn that's a little over my head. Sounds cool though. Are they easy to set up? Mine would be pretty simple i would think... Router, ONT, maybe a phone jack. Ehternet would probly run directly from router to around house, very small house and only a few things that would need a connection.

I've got one of these in the garage, can neatly be placed in the wardrobe wall.

You can fit all you need in there - ONT, router, patch panel, switch and a power supply.  I have the router out in the lounge for wifi purposes and feeding back to the switch in the cabinet for the rest of the network.

@jonb. Nice. That looks all good
Is it like bungee cords that hold all the components in place?

No, easiest way is to stick a piece of board on the backside before installing and screw most things in, or even sticky velcro patches on e.g
the switch or router.

If you go the velcro path, clean the surfaces with alcohol first or it will all be at the bottom of the cabinet in a day or so.
