well out the blue today I was contacted by BigPipe earlier today (I must say support and transparency from them is the best I've ever seen!);

sorry to let those know who have been bragging they get fantastic connections on VDSL (as they'll start to drop a little I guess with increased amounts of cross talk), but that should be more than compensated by people shifting to fibre if they are able to.
Big thanks to Chorus and for BigPipe communicating this to me - hopefully I'll now be able to get vdsl in the interim until fibre hits our area (Dec 2019).

Nope. It means that more people who are further away from the cabinet or exchange with a longer local loop will be able to get VDSL2. From memory it's another 130,000 premises that will be able to get VDSL2.
The downside is increased crosstalk could degrade speeds for existing customers, although the move to 998 would have compensated for this with some customers.

what you are getting now is what you can expect to get going forward. as the change wont affect you.
Though as Steve said there is the potential for some people lines to drop a little due to cross talk.

unlikely unless chorus upgrade all their maps, but you should be able to ask their ISP for a prequal and if the figures come back under 15dB then they should be good to order it
littleheaven: Is there any way to find out what areas the extended coverage will affect? My parents can't get VDSL and fibre is still over a year away. I'm hoping they might squeak in once the higher tolerance kicks in.

On my old adsl settings earlier today the status used to be as follows so it looks like I've got better download speed but worse upload speed on vdsl?
do things improve as the vdsl trains or is this as good as I should expect - ironically its the upload speed I wanted to improve for skype calls etc.

Yeah we finally got there! Give it 10 days for DLM to kick in and see.
Do you have a master filter installed? looks likely that the VDSL is running at a lower upstream powerlevel, equating in a drop in speed for the same specturm usage.
Your line is very long, if it wasnt for US0 i wouldnt expect upstream to even sync. Would love to see a specturm graph for your line though.

I have all cabling disconnected from the line apart from the single cable into the Draytek 130. A master socket was put in when the Chorus technician was checking the ADSL line a couple of years ago.
BigPipe has requested a line check - but to be honest it seems people on fringe vdsl like I seem to be have the same experience - crap upload speed and slightly better download speed, and most of these edge cases (like the type that 998 was supposed to enable) are likely to have similar experience and other postings suggest downgrade to ADSL may be preferable.....
I believe I'm about 1.2km from the exchange.
4 years for fibre.. i really hope something can be with this VDSL - although it looks like I'm so out of luck on this....
I just wish technology would just work - it always feels like such a beeping battle (and I work in IT!).
If someone could tell me how to get a spectrum graph out of a draytek 130 in bridge mode to a UBNT ERLite-3 - I'll gladly post the info.
