Anyone using Starlink for their business on the forum?

I had looked into it for a couple of rural clients last year and ruled it out, but this recent offer has put it back on the table.

Anyone seen the fine print that states the 'residential' offering can't be used for business purposes? Currently one of the clients is running ±250Gb (up/down) traffic each month, so not excessive. The only bit missing is a static IP.

Now with added retail presence

With Noel Leeming  to become High street distributor for them I can see their grip on remote connections becoming pretty well established....   ( and hurting a few WISPs on the way)

I wonder if this is ahead of getting in on the Govt's very rural connectivity scheme, (Which I assume they are wanting to be part of )

Haha, hopefully people will be able to walk in and buy the Ethernet adapter off the shelf. That would be helpful.

Are everyone's dishys are still pointing south (within a few degrees)?  Just wondering because I see that in the US some of the dishys have moved from N to NE (apparently for capacity optimisation) .  Some people are reporting that they now have obstructions due to the changes in the required field of view.

Saw a dishy out in the wild yesterday.  It was on a workers hut beside the reopened road between Blenheim and Nelson (the road has been closed for 7 weeks for major repairs).  Starlink must be a game changer for communications in road construction, forestry etc.

Modnar: Has anyone tried starlink for RV in NZ yet? As getting campervan and moving to the south island early next year and this looks like it will allow me to remote work with zoom a lot better when I'm not home.

Bump. Anyone tried it with an RV/campervan/motorhome?

My cousin was suddenly getting loss of service/ bad cable messages. Their initial report was obstruction, move dish. After she got them to dig deeper and asked me for advice, I said ask if they had moved her AoA to get a different cell.

The reply was no, we have made minor tweaks in your region but yours is purely obstruction. After saying that's odd, the last 4 months have been fine.
It suddenly turned into 'we found an issue and are sending a new dishy..please do move it though'

Soooo read that how you will. But hers certainly got effected recently.

Yes, mine's still pointing south. I'm northwest of Auckland, it has been running since Sept 2021 and has definitely been a game-changer.

Now with Starlink, and solar energy getting cheaper, you could feasibly buy a cheap house in the middle of nowhere while living and working remotely quite comfortably.

Anyone had success in finding an Ethernet Adapter for the new Starlink kit?

I'm dealing with a new install that was ordered directly by a client and the relevant staff member is on extended leave and no-one knows the account login details......

Thank you for the heads up. He was able to give me some guidance and the client should have a link up and running tomorrow.

Well a week after installing the Ethernet adapter cable, I got a roasting from the client, asking "why is the connection so slow?".

I've encountered an anomaly that many others have, using the Ethernet adapter cable drops the speed to low end 4G type speeds (35-60 down/5-10 up). Versus 150-270 down / 16-20 up  using the native WiFi Starlink provides. Very curious.

As yet no one has been able to shed a definitive light on it. C

Yes the company I work for has remote orchard sites and we have started to move from 4G RBI which was painfully slow to Starlink. One location has an office with 5 people working out of it and they love it. We have gone from 5-10mbps download to over 150. There's enough bandwidth to run more staff in future at the site too. Our IT guy said the business plans are coming but for now, we have no issue with Starlink at all, seems only to have minor downtime of a few seconds now but it's getting better and better and then and we pay for it on the work credit card unlike RBI when we had an account but that's a minor thing. I don't think Starlink care we are a business.

I opted for Spark after weeks of investigation, but its mostly as my rural location still sits well within view of a tower (albeit km's away) I can average a 50-60mb download link which is suffiecent and with Starlink introducing 1TB caps, it made sense to go with spark that was a third of the price for the same monthly data.

If their pricing becomes more competitive remains to be seen.

I see ComCom will start including Starlink next month in their MBNZ reporting.  Will be interesting to see the results.

The standard Samknows Starlink tests were using about 25% of my total traffic, so I asked to be put on the lightweight test schedule.  Competing wireless services (ie 4G FWA and WISP FWA ) are put on the lightweight test schedule automatically, so it seemed a good compromise to move to that schedule too.

There's some more info in the Measuring Broadband New Zealand Programme Technical Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Just noticed I'm getting an IPV6 address on a Starlink connection. I'm not sure if that's new, or I just haven't noticed ir?
