Hello Everyone,

I have a client on Waiheke using a DG834Gv3 router getting approx 7 Megabits connection, and myself in Mission bay using a Netgear DG834GT router getting approx 7 Megabits also, but routers are using the latest firmware.

We both get PPP disconnects 1-2 times a day, but the ADSL stays up, we can never get the PPP back up (PAP Authentication error) until we reboot the router.

This was discussed earlier this year at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=49&TopicId=9041&page_no=5 but the thread is now locked

Ihug's helpdesk states that it's not their network the fault is happening on, it's acceptable performance on their network, they can't resolve it and we should be lucky we are not getting 20-30 disconnections a day like some customers. The ihug person said his home connection disconnected 5 times a day!

I believe it is to do with http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=1&ObjectID=10412417 and http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU0611/S00431.htm

There was a wholesale informer from Telecom on it, but I can't find it. Basically they can't work out what the problem is.

Is anyone else having these problems?

Do you need to reboot your modem, or does it just reconnect?

Does anyone else use Netgear DG834G's? How do you find them? (I love them)

If the unit has a PPP debug feature this is probably where you want to start looking. If you can force PAP/CHAP try forcing this to CHAP and see if that improves things.

I have a D-Link DSL-302G (uninspiring), joined iHug 6 months ago (accessing the network from Petone), and have sporadic periods when the disconnect problem drives me crazy.

A couple of weeks ago the number of disconnects in a 24 hour period was easily 20 to 30. Rebooting the router made no difference. Typically the connection appears for a few minutes at a time and then disappears again. On average it is more like 5 or 6 disconnects a day when the problem presents itself - and then solid performance for days/weeks until it flares up again.

I notice the disconnects 'cos I work from home and stream music non-stop for most of the day…

Maybe the cause of the problem is a telco network shaping algorithm gone bad!

I've been experiencing the same issue with my dg834g on my Orcon connection since the last week of November.  I get frequent disconnects.  On some days the connection may last up to seven hours but then on days like today the longest one is 45 minutes and often I'm getting 8-10 disconnects an hour!

I've tried replacing/isolating filters, cables and everything except the Router itself as I don't have access to another.  Netgear support muppets suggest there is nothing wrong.  But something definitely is not right.

I'm supposed to be on a 256 kbps/128 kbps plan but the problem started when the plan got unhinged (Orcon seems unable to control it, one tech said it's Telecom's fault) and I'm getting speeds up to 1500 kbps down, and 160 kbps up.  And disconnects aplenty.  (if that  is the max speed I can expect in Grey Lynn I certainly won't be upgrading to "unleashed" broadband)

So if anyone else is having this problem add your 5 cents worth - someone between the ISPs and Netgear has a case to answer.

Hi,

I have the same problem using my Nokia Modem with Orcon. It seems to be a problem with the connection, I wonder if the SNR is the problem here. Telecom seems to be doing something on their side, as I used to get 6M/128 on the max/128 plan with orcon but the disconnects started happening and I'd be getting somewhere between 2-3M on my line now.

Usually a restart of my modem will bring the connection back up but the time it stays up varies.

Maybe you should switch providers.  I dont have an issue with my connection at all.  I remote connect to home from work everyday so I know when I have lost the connection because I get a new IP and i cannot connect.  At times I have been on the same IP for 2 - 3 weeks running without a disconnect.  PDQ all the way.

We dont blame out provider.
