I moved over the last couple of weeks and the new property had a structured cabling cabinet, but no master splitter.

 

To get things up and running quickly I used a standard ADSL splitting off a phone jack and got the following performance.

 

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 801 / 14.741
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0,00 / 0,00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 10,5 / 19,0

At the weekend I installed an xDSL master splitter plus connected the modem directly in the structured cabling cabinet in the garage. Approx 50% boost in upload and a reasonable boost in download. It will be interesting to see how this improves as DLM kicks in

Nice one openmedia!

 

Diagnosis driven DLM will kick in pretty quickly and will reach 80% of line optimisation rapidly. After that it can take up to 10 days to reach steady state. ^Mike

Yep that's a typical experience.

 

 

 

Digging into it, I'm seeing you originally had low upstream, Low speeds in the upstream on ADSL is quite typically an indication of internal wiring pulling it down.

 

Large drop in error rates there, which will be the larger improvement (be it invisible otherwise)

 

 

 

ddDLM has you already on the 6dB profile for snr, but PSD changes still have the chance of netting an extra boost :)

Internal wiring is all Cat5e for phone but I'm wondering if there is some serious cross talk somewhere as even with the master splitter our voice line is dreadful.

 

Line isn't quite as good as our old address, but 16 down and 1.2 up isn't too bad until we can get fibre.

 

Might try a different newer modem to see if it has any differences.

I did one recently on a farm. It had very poor 7Mbps down / 0.5Mbps up. After the splitter install a bit of an increase to 8/0.8 and no more disconnects. However, SNR was sitting at 27 - so it's been on a major stability profile. Approx 10 days later, dd-DLM has recognised the now clean line and said lets try an SNR of 6. Now connection is running at 16/0.9 - so very happy broadband now.

 

@hio77 this is a Spark connection, I'll PM you the phone number. If you have time, you may like to post some more stats.

 

 





Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Can be a little difficult to comment on this without exposing too much about the customer.

 

However; i can definitely agree with everything above.

 

 

 

When i pull the line back to the last 60 day period one thing you have not covered is very noticeable.

 

The customer experienced Frequent disconnections (6-16 so often dipping below chorus acceptable levels but probably annoying)

 

 

 

 

 

Physical stats, averaging 7102/594 straight up to 16524/901 average.

 

Drop in line attenuation from 34dB down to 26dB.

 

 

 

ddDLM is very much still training on this line, it was heavily pulled back due to the errors on the line.

 

 

 

Weekly data confirming error rates won't be in until about 2 weeks away to realistically show a drop in errors.

at 25dB it can be a mixed bag. (I'm assuming you mean OP)

 

 

 

Personally i love to see VDSL go live, it just requires a clean line (especially at distance)

Well Chorus had to come out due to a lot of static on the voice line. They've replaced the xDSL Splitter, but I'm now seeing a high number of FEC errors on the line, approximately 300 errors a minute based on a couple of tests. Any ideas?

i'd do a reboot, see if they don't go away.

 

Alternatively, it is possible one leg is not terminated fully on the DSL side of splitter. (assuming noise has gone away)

Since the splitter swap the noise on the POTs line has disappeared, but based on my wiring I'd say they've installed the two wires off the xDSL splitter the wrong way around for the voice connection.

 

 

 

On the data side the connection looks correct, so I'll try a modem reboot. I've heard this old Technicolor modems occasionally show high FEC rates.

Did they have BT jacks at the end of the CAT5 feeds??

The DSL side of the splitter is straight into an RJ45 socket with the modem plugged directly into the socket

 

The Voice side of the splitter goes into a voice distribution board with cat5 to all of the BT sockets around the house. It appears that the voice cables are reversed but the data cables are correct.

 

Voice now has no static, but I'm seeing all these FECs on the Data side.

What do you mean voice cables reversed?

Would have thought it was strange for a structured cable house to have BT jacks installed rather than just two RJ45s per outlet.
