Finally got our second VDSL line activated yesterday - only took them 6 weeks.

I only got my modem hooked up last night, so haven't had the chance to do a huge amount of testing.

But this is what I'm see initially:

Line #1 - 18mb/s + attenuation of 22

This is our office line and was installed 3 weeks ago

No master splitter.

Tracing the lines under the house there's some really dodgy cabling - splicing phone cable into cat5e cable - all open, no junction boxes, just horrible to look at.

I was hoping/expecting that when I get the under house cabling tidied up I would see line noise drop and bandwidth to improve.

VDSL calculators suggest that I'm getting close to the max bandwidth for that level of line noise.

Line #2 - 12mb/sec + reported attenuation of 22

activated yesterday

new master splitter installed by chorus (he charged $70 - did it while hooking up the new line last week)

Distance from the master splitter to modem is <1m

I had expected that line #2 with a master splitter to be better, or at worst the same as line #1

but losing 1/3 of the bandwidth!?!?!?!? I'm confused.

Both lines come from the same cabinet, the faster of the 2 is probably a little further - maybe 30m

Same modems used on both lines.

Over the next day or so I'll see what stats the modem is reporting.

If anyone has an thoughts/suggestions to explain the speed difference between the 2 lines I'd love to hear it.

Any guidance to tools/tests that I should be using?

cheers

Phil

ah! I'm slowly wrapping my head around VDSL - so missing the 200mb/s fibre connection from my last house.

How long does DLM take to work its magic?

cheers

approximately 10 days, but its always active so it pays not to reboot the modems too often

you need to post up the line stats for both lines so the more knowledgable people can see if there is anything amiss on them

who are your connections through?

Why you would move from a house that had fibre to one that only had Copper?

We bought a property with home with a running business - the business being the main reason for the move.

We knew we'd be dropping down to copper, but initial line report from chorus suggested we could get 30mb/s - but now we're live we're seeing a far noisier line than we were initially led to believe.

Aptil 2019 is the estimate for fibre availability at our place :-(

I had 2 lines at once, if one sync'd then the other would drop is SNR to keep sync or lose sync.
They would interfere with each other and depending on what one turned on first you'd get that one with higher sync

I'd also suggest we get someone out to re wire your house too. That will not be helping..

Ahh my eyes! yell

You'll likely result a better connection if you have this tidied up professionally or if you're a bit of a handy man give it a crack yourself :)

I know!!!! You can see why I'm thinking my VDSL could well go faster if I get the wiring sorted.

Here's the wiring job that splices the aerial cable into 2 coaxial cables for 2 rooms - that don't work!!!!

This is outdoors, exposed to the elements - Click to see full size

I'm looking to get someone in who knows what they're doing. I'm a tinkerer and could probably do better myself, but this really calls for an expert, there's no saying what other joys are hidden under the house :-)

Maybe we should start a "bad wiring" thread

cheers
Phil

i'd clean that wiring up, do post line stats though and we will be able to gleem a little more there.

it is possible your second line has lost the pair lotto and is quite simply a really bad pair or has multiples off it..

Consider running Cat5/6 cable yourself to reduce the labour time of the tech who comes to site.

I was under my house at the weekend to run a length of Cat 6 from the lounge to the garage. I saw exactly the same mess as what's in the photo with expose cat 5 joins. I want to clean it up but I'm getting 55-60Mb/s down and 25-30Mb/s up at the moment so I'm thinking better to leave well alone. Five should be here late in 2018 so I'm just hoping it all holds up until I can get them to place the ONT in the garage next to the data cabinet.

Its hard to tell whether both the lines share any untwisted cable, but that would certainly cause crosstalk and you would want to replace any shared phone cable with at least Cat5e or better (its actually great phone line). Also please move those cables away from the power cable, especially where its joined since that could add to the line noise.

EDIT: the white cable is cat5e too, but the join is horrible so could run new cable from their direct to each outlet in the house. At the very least it needs scotchlocks done properly with the insulation going all the way into the join. Should never be able to see exposed copper!

Time to find a new industry!

the untwisted 049 is the worst contender for passing the crosstalk sadly..

Update...

2 weeks now since we got VDSL up & running to our house. The advice on waiting for DLM to do its thing was correct, the home line slowly improved from the initial 12mb/s to hitting about 18mb/s

Comparing the modem stats between the home & office lines shows similar'ish figures

oddly the office line with higher attenuation is getting slightly faster speeds than the home line that has the master filter/splitter installed

Home - Click to see full size

Office - Click to see full size

before I actually moved my service from the old house to the new my ISP provided me with this line report

ISP/Chorus line report - Click to see full size

This showed an attenuation of 14-15dB - which is a lot lower than I'm experiencing, and would have given me far faster speeds.

Why is that ISP line report so different?

The master filter/splitter isn't really giving me a faster line - both home & office is giving me approximately 18mb/s

What matters? Is it the distance to my local cabinet or my local exchange?

I've found https://gis.geek.nz/chorus which shows me where my local cabinets are - but I can't find where my local exchange is (I'm in Stanmore Bay, Whangaparaoa)

cheers

Phil

You're approx. 1.3km from exchange, so very marginal for VDSL. Also much more crosstalk on exchange feed Vs cabinet.

Exchange is cnr Tower Hill + Whangaparaoa Rd's.
