I'm wondering what the most likely cause is. Faulty router, Vodafone, or the new flatmate doing something like seeding the latest movies over bit torrent. Testing at 5 am on a Sunday morning so unlikely to be outside interference. The router is a Vodafone Home Gateway HG659 on Vodafone VDSL, and has been on for 6 days. two people connecting via wifi & one via ethernet. We have had trouble with a faulty router before, and occasionally reboots have fixed it, but sometimes it seems to come right by itself. Ping plotter image below: EDIT: Maybe someone has been hacked?

Ping packet loss isn't generally a useful metric, as since it's so low priority it can be discarded any time. On your internal network it's generally ok.

Your Traceroute looks generally ok, a bit of a spike of latency occasionally, but again that could be a router delaying that packet as it's low priority.

I tried to ping a half dozen of those servers and it wasn't replying to ICMP ping, so not sure what protocol you're using. I ping'd my own USA based EC2 instance and all results were 162 to 165ms, so little variation.

What happens when you do this over ethernet? WiFi isn't really good for testing anything online except your WiFi.

Thanks. Those are Amazon's game servers, ping is disabled on the last few. I was wondering if the wifi packet loss might signify a problem on our end. Playing the game at the moment and the problem has stopped again...

If you test over Ethernet does the same issue happen?

Will try and get the guy with ethernet to test later, but it has just turned to custard again. Does this look like it's Vodafone's problem?

No. You need to use Ethernet and not WiFi. This is likely your problem here.

I know wifi is not the best, but I normally get a fairly stable 250ish ping which is totally playable.

WiFi is also subject to external interference and that is a factor that can always change. The fact the main packet loss / high latency is to your router puts using WiFi as the cause.

I'm on wired with spark ufb and I'm having big problems with gaming on amazon servers in the USA. Such that my fps character freezes and is uncontrollable. Not sure where the issue lies. Ping is only 208ms.

As MM said, packet loss is happening at the first hop (your router), this can only indicate that wifi is an issue.

Yep it could be someone else hogging airtime, but at the end of the day, that's wifi. Your best bet is head out to PB Tech and grab a couple of cheap powerline adapters (less than $50)

Thanks. The first reply from timmmay pointed out that packet loss to the router might not signify much, and sure enough, even with 40% packet loss to router, my game is running fine. I can test lag and packet loss in game by crafting stacks of materials, which stop scrolling smoothly when I have lag. I'm going to google around the Amazon game server issue.

Maybe try out Ping Plotter when it's happening (free version is what I'm using)?

Your router isn't under enough load and very likely isn't configured to drop internal ICMP packets under load.

Very, very likely that you're experiencing WiFi issues. Plug in a network cable to confirm, and if you're still getting that same packet loss with a cable, then the next step is to actually try another Router out.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

OK thanks

I also disabled origin in game to see if helped but made no difference.

the likes of technicolor always came preconfigured to do this with ICMP....

Didn't the OP say he was on Vodafone.. any idea who makes their "Vodafone modem"? ;)
