I'm looking at upgrading our office broadband to a reliable and robust fibre connection.

 

 

 

Is there much of a benefit to having "Premium UFB" vs just standard business fibre from vodafone or spark?

 

 

 

Myrepublic has a 200/200 premium plan for $300 which is obviously a lot more than a regular business fibre plan but I'm willing to pay this if we'll really get some benefit or more reliable speeds?

Firstly, I would never consider MyRepublic for a high grade internet connection.

You need to look at what you actually do in the office. Are you just using "cloud" services like Office 365 or g suite? Are you hosting web applications that need to be available all the time?

The fact is these days is that a standard bitstream 2/2a UFB connection is really quite solid. Even if you buy a bitstream 3 service you still need to then upgrade the SLA, but really all you are getting is a quicker response time in the case of a fault.
The other thing you have the option to do though is buy a CIR but unless you have engaged an IT professional who has given you a use case for a CIR, this is just a waste of money.

We mainly are using cloud based apps, g suite, xero etc however we have also gone fully VOIP. That’s why I was thinking of upgrading internet because we can’t afford to lose sales calls.

Perhaps a router with 4G failover would be a better option to increase reliability

Yep if you want redundancy adding 4G is a great option.

Look at a decent business grade device that can have both your fibre and a 4G connection live. So then it can automatically failover to the 4G if the fibre is ever down.

My Republic isn't really well suited for business IMO especially for that price. Go with a provider with a good reputation instead.

Premium UFB has a faster resolution time for business connections. If its a fiber fault between you and the ISP, which is the only reason the technician has to be sent out, they have to be there within 4 hours (might need to double check) from the time the ISP lodges the fault. 

 

With residential grade connections I think it is something like next business day.

Most other LFC's also have Business SLA's you can go for...

premium fiber must be matched with gold plated connectors on ethernet cables :)

TBH depends on business. agency/online/etc must have any faults response time to an absolute minimum, otherwise what's the point? so go for whatever allows the quickest resolution guaranteed (backup connection offers/etc).

 

and look at your contingency plan, that is MUST have.

My view is having a tested backup plan is probably better value than business UFB.
If you have a prepaid 4G router like the Skinny ones then have a process to top it up as needed then you're probably fine.
Otherwise if the plan is everyone teathers their laptop to the mobile phone that's probably fine too.
It really depends on what critical services you have in your office and what you can live without.
Post Christchurch I know a lot of businesses moved local services to the cloud and the DR strategy was work from home or a colleagues house and if there was a local landline divert it to a mobile.
