Hi there,

I live in suburb where fibre optic is running from exchange to the cabinet and the cabinet is just next to my neighbour, Yea~ Very close.

The cabinet was upgraded to ADSL 2 in October and my neighbour who is with telecom is able to get 20Mbps download but I am with Snap and I only get 6Mbps download.

So I rang snap and they said they are using ADSL2 as well and told me that i have to enable "something" in my linksys WAG310 ADSL2+ capable modem to enable ADSL 2.

Does anyone of you have any idea what setting in the modem that I need to change?

Much appreciated!!

Basically you want to login to the admin ui for the device via your web browser and check the setup > adsl page.

The default login/password and ip address are listed here:

Snap uses G.DMT (G.992.1) or G.lite (G.992.2) for their DSL configuration. Does this support ADSL2 and can I change the DSL configuration to ADSL2+?

im on Snap and have just been upgraded to  ASDL2 since Tuesday and i use a Linksys Wag160n and i have mine set to Multimode in DSL modulation under setup, and i sync at 15000 Kbps down and 980Kbps up and im about 800 metres from the cabinet so you should get better than that .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Ok, I will try multimode and see...

Did you guys sort this out? Your ISP doesnt decide what version of ADSL telecom sets the connection to, so if you set your modem to multimode it should negotiate that automatically. If ADSL2+ is already enabled, any modem that supports it should have a choice for that in the modem settings page. Otherwise you need an ADSL2+ or VDSL2 modem (VDSL2 is backward compatible with ADSL).

Time to find a new industry!

Hi there,

I changed to multimode and the speed test increased to average 11Mb/s and 0.8Mb/s. That's fast but still short of the 24Mb/s advertised :D

Thanks a lot for all your feedback.

just remember the speed test is different to what your modem  will sync at , as i said my modem syncs at 15000 Kbs but speed tests show only around 11000 Kbs so you may be better than you think

Hi, tionge, post the line stats from the modem, there will be a page that shows a largish table of stats such as line attenuation, noise margin, sync speeds etc.

Also note you will never get more than sync rate of around 18Mb/s on a Telecom DSLAM due to the noise targets it has been configured for. Also speedtests indicate the TCP throughput, sync rates are the bare modem speeds, there is a layer of ATM between the two (for ADSL1/2/2+) which means TCP throughput is never more than around 80% of sync rate.

G.lite only supports 1.5Mbps download speed though:

You sure snap uses that?

This is the report from the modem:

Modulation Type:
ADSL_2plus (configured as MultiMode)

Status: Up

Provider:

Downstream Rate: 18026 Kbps

Upstream Rate: 972 Kbps

Downstream Noise Margin: 12.3 dB

Upstream Noise Margin: 13.6 dB

Downstream Attenuation: 0.5 dB

Upstream Attenuation: 2.3 dB

Downstream Power: 12.8 dBmV

Upstream Power: 0.0 dBmV

Total Bytes Sent: 1240592848 Bytes

Total Bytes Received: 0 Bytes

So the downstream rate is about 18Mb/s which I think is very good. How come the total bytes received is 0 bytes?

Dont know, but I think the above stats answer all your questions, your on ADSL2+, with a sync rate of 18Mb/s, ADSL in NZ does not get better than this, as for how well snap provide capacity to your connection is something you need to take up with them, but I dont believe there is any issue with your modem, connection or line.

If you set the device to multimode all this means is that it will try all dsl variations i.e auto checking, this can delay your syncing process... Just set it to dsl2+ and leave it there.

Stats look fine

24Mbit is the theoretical max for ADSL2+

The further you are in line distance from the cabinet/exchange, the higher the attenuation and noise on the line thus the lower the sync rate.
18Mbit is a very good sync rate, I'd be happy Tongue out
