Pando Netwoks has released a global internet speed study.

Ironically NZ beats Australia in speed (348 Kbps AU, 364 Kbps NZ) . It makes me instantly suspicious! Broadband must be slow in the outback.....

Not the first time I've seen New Zealand broadband showing better numbers than other countries. People think all connections are terrible here, but that's the exception, not the rule it seems.

If you compare NZ to any other first world country (ie see the map) - then it is in fact "terrible" compared to the majority of them. And then of course you have to consider data caps making the matter worse. You might say that's a different issue altogether, but actually data caps effectively limit the speed at which you can consume data at, assuming you want the same data - once you run out, you're going to get much slower speeds (or pay out the nose), or you would hold back on downloading things in order to avoid hitting your cap, which effectively lowers your per-month data consumption speed. In other words, speed can be measured in megabits (or gigabits, etc) per month, rather than just per second.

I think the cabinetisation project is helping a lot. Note that the results are January through June. At that time my average speed was somewhere around 400 KB/s. Now that I'm on a cabinet, I'm sitting at more like 1500+ (depending on the server). It'll be interesting to see what next year's results look like once this batch of cabinet upgrades has been completed.

By the end of this year when the cabinetisation project is complete around 80% of NZers should be getting a minimum of 10Mbps sync speeds, with an average sync speed of ~14Mbps if they're using DSL. If you're not getting these speeds you need to a) check your house wiring which is the biggest cause of sub par speeds, or b) ask your ISP

I don't understand your comment. Mine was about absolute speeds, not relative rankings, so I'm not sure what the rest of the world has to do with it. Our average speed should be higher than 364 KB/s next time around given the sheer number of cabinets out there.

If that's not what you meant, then disregard my comment I guess. But the context of the study is mainly how countries relate to each other, so I took your comment as regarding that.
